LOCK
HAVEN, Pa.
Powered by a three-goal second-half outburst, the Lock
Haven University field hockey team (2-0) blew past Lehigh University
(1-2) 3-1 today (Aug. 31) at Charlotte Smith Field. Junior
Mandy Daschbach (Telford,
Pa./Christopher Dock)
put together
a three-point day, notching the game-winning goal and an assist in the
contest.
The
Mountain Hawks got on the board with a penalty-corner goal off the stick
of Mary Beth Kuenne, the first point allowed by sophomore keeper
Becca Yerkes (West
Grove, Pa./Avon Grove).
The half would end with that 1-0 Lehigh advantage.
At
halftime, we stressed keeping constant pressure on the ball, said LHU
head coach Pat Rudy. I knew with our speed and depth, we could
afford to play full pressure over the entire field.
The Lady
Eagles wasted little time, as senior forward
Nikki Sweger (Dauphin, Pa./Central
Dauphin East)
evened the tally just 22 seconds into the second half, off a Daschbach
cross pass from the right side.
Daschbach put the Lady Eagles up 2-1 with an
unassisted breakaway, gliding to the left and squirting a shot just
inside the near-side of the cage. Junior
Sarah
Huber (Plymouth Meeting,
Pa./Christopher Dock)
also scored for the second-straight contest, as Sweger worked her way to
the left baseline, crossed a pass to the middle of the circle and Huber
fired it home.
Yerkes
(2-0) made four saves in five tries for the win, while Meghan Gove (1-2)
was peppered for 13 saves in the loss.
Daschbach,
Yerkes, Rudy, Sweger, Huber and the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in
action Friday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. when they travel to neighboring Penn
State University.
