TOWSON, Md. –
With an inconsistent offense unable to maintain
possession, the Lock Haven University field hockey squad (2-2) fell
today (Sept. 9) at Towson University (5-0) 1-0. Junior
Becca Yerkes (West
Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) posted a career-high
eight saves in the hard-luck loss.
An early Tiger goal by Kelli
Richards was the lone blemish on Yerkes’s record for the day, coming on
a penalty corner shot from the left side of the circle.
The LHU offense had quick spurts of
energy all game long, but couldn’t maintain a solid pressure on the TU
defense.
“We need to get off to a stronger
start, something we haven’t done in the past three games,” said LHU head
coach Pat Rudy. “We have to
take the game to them from the first whistle. Our passing game was not
on today, and we were also lacking in some fundamentals.”
Yerkes did her best to keep the Lady
Eagles in the contest, shouldering a 10-3 deficit in penalty-corner
opportunities. Yerkes made one key save with 9:30 left in the game,
using her arm pad to reject a high shot that would have effectively put
the game out of reach.
Yerkes falls to 2-2 on the season,
while TU’s Christina Armer made six saves for the shutout. Lady Eagle
field hockey has dropped their past two games, the last time that
occurred in the regular season was Oct. 5 and 7, 1999, back-to-back
defeats by Bucknell University and Kutztown University.
Huber, Dashbach, Rudy, Hughes and
the rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Sunday, Oct. 3 at x p.m.
against Sacred Heart University.
