LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Two first-half goals were all the Lock Haven University
field hockey team (3-2) would need, as they defeated La Salle University
(2-4), 2-0 today (Sept. 11) at Charlotte Smith Field.
Senior striker
Nikki Sweger (Dauphin,
Pa./Central Dauphin East) wrapped a pass from junior
Sarah Huber (Plymouth
Meeting, Pa./Christopher Dock) around an out-of-position goalkeeper
to get the scoring started just over 10 minutes in. Five and a half
minutes later, Huber would tack on her third goal of the season, tying
her for the team lead, and giving the Lady Eagles the 2-0 win.
“Today we played good team defense,”
said LHU head coach Pat Rudy.
“For the first time in probably three games, we started off strong. In
field hockey, to score early and force the opposition into coming from
behind puts you in an excellent position.”
The Lady Eagle offense also showed
some fire, pounding out 14 shots in the first half, getting two goals
and forcing LSU keeper Ellen Axelsen to make eight saves.
LHU goalkeeper junior
Becca Yerkes (West Grove,
Pa./Avon Grove) made one first-half save for her second shutout of
the season, while Axelsen finished with 10 saves in the loss.
Sweger, Huber, Rudy, Yerkes and the
rest of the Lady Eagles are back in action Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
at the University at Albany (2-3).
