Bald Eagles Defeat Mansfield To Close Out the 2000 Season

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Bald Eagles (3-8, 1-5 PSAC West) earned a commanding 24-0 victory over Mansfield University (1-9, 1-5 PSAC East) to cap off the season on a winning note.  Having defeated the Mountaineers, 31-0, last season, it marked the first time since the 1961, ’60 seasons that The Haven has recorded two consecutive shutout wins, defeating Shippensburg by a pair of 20-0 scores in those two years.  

                The Bald Eagles held Mansfield to just 37 passing yards and grabbed three interceptions, including one with a return for touchdown, to capture the victory.   To its credit, the Mountaineer defense limited the Bald Eagles to only 57 yards on the rush, but was unable to cover LHU's passing game and gave up 181 yards through the air.

                A defensive showcase on both sides of the field highlighted much of the first half.  Mansfield forced a fumble on LHU's first drive, then kept the Haven out of Mountaineer territory on the following drives, forcing two punts then a missed field goal.  Lock Haven forced three straight punts and then Haven linebacker Chad Koleno (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) intercepted a pass from freshman quarterback Travis Motley (York/Central York) and ran it back 53 yards for the score.  Koleno's touchdown opened the gate on Bald Eagle scoring in the second quarter, as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead by the end of the first half.

                Recovering the ball off a Mansfield fumble at the MU seven yardline early in the second quarter, The Haven running forces found themselves unable to crack through the Mountaineer line into the endzone.  After a failed pass play on third and goal, LHU's Matt Mapes (Williamsport/Williamsport Area) entered the game and sent a 22-yarder through the uprights to push Lock Haven ahead by a 10-0 margin. 

                Mansfield drove 59 yards on the ensuing possession all the way to the Lock Haven 21-yardline but decided to attempt the field goal, which missed just short, turning over the ball to the Bald Eagles.  LHU worked the ball downfield, highlighted by a 14 yard completion from senior quarterback Ed Galiczynski (Barnesboro/Northern Cambria) to Derrick Shields (Harrisburg/C.D. East) and a 12 yard scamper by Galiczynski.  On second and 10, Galiczynski unleashed a 28-yard touchdown reception to sophomore receiver John Caldwell (Va. Beach, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) to up LHU's advantage to 17-0 before the close of the half. 

                The only points in the second half came late in the third quarter.  With the ball at midfield, Galiczynski rolled back in the pocket and waited, receiving big help from LHU blockers before he finally caught Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois Area) coming across the middle for a 19-yard advance.  After a one-yard gain by Marshall, LHU's Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) recorded a 26-yard reception into the endzone from Galiczynski.  The Mapes extra point was good, and after a scoreless fourth stanza, brought the final score to 24-0. 

                The Lock Haven offense was led by senior signal caller Galiczynski, who tallied 181 yards on 15-for-27 passing with two touchdowns along with leading the Bald Eagles on the ground with 30 yards on six carries.  John Caldwell (6 rec., 65 yds, 1 TD) and Derrick Shields (5 rec., 43 yds) paced Haven receivers, and Justin Marshall (18 carries, 25 yds) and Teon Higgs (East Greenville/Upper Perkiomen) (4 carries, 16 yds) piloted the ground game.  Defensively, linebacker Chad Koleno led the way with nine tackles (7 solo), including two for loss, a pass breakup, and the interception with the return for touchdown.  Fellow linebacker Dan Wissinger (Johnstown/Ferndale Area) contributed eight tackles, and junior defensive end Chris Hileman (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) added seven stops. 

                The Mountaineers were led offensively by freshman (red-shirt) tailback  Joe Holland (Scranton/Bishop O'Hara), who racked up 94 yards rushing on 22 carries.  Rookie quarterback Travis Motley was able to connect on nine-out-of-23 pass attempts for 29 yards, and also added 10 yards rushing to the Mountaineer total.  The MU defense was led by outside linebacker Aaron Assad (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove), who recorded seven stops, including one for loss, a fumble recovery, and a pass breakup.  Strong safety Daricus Haynes (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) tallied six tackles, with one for loss, and also partially blocked a Haven punt.

SLIPPERY ROCK CRUISES TO A 41-15 VICTORY OVER LOCK HAVEN
Record-Setting Day Recorded by Both SRU and LHU Kickers

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania (7-2, 5-1 PSAC West) recorded a 20-point first quarter to jump-start this afternoon's 41-15 victory over Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (2-7, 1-4).  Three PSAC kicking records were either broken or tied over the course of the game, with Slippery Rock's Morgan Anderson earning a spot as the conference's all-time points after leader and all-time kick scoring leader.  Lock Haven's Matt Mapes accounted for LHU's 15 points with five field goal attempts to tie the PSAC single-game mark.

            LHU kicker Matt Mapes converted on a 22-yard field goal on their opening drive to put the Bald Eagles on the scoreboard with the early 3-0 advantage.  The lead was short-lived, however, as The Rock's D.J. Flick ran the ball 81 yards into the endzone after a reverse from Nate Stewart on the ensuing kickoff.  The Haven knotted the score at 6-6 with a 35-yard field goal by Mapes, but a fumble at their own 33 yardline on their next drive would lead to another Slippery Rock score.  Rock running back Dorrian Glenn completed the drive with a two-yard scamper and the Anderson kick was good to regain the lead, 13-6. 

            Another fumble deep in LHU's own territory would mar their next attempt as well, and Slippery Rock's Stan Kennedy took off down the right sideline for the touchdown, bringing the score after one period of play to 20-6. 

Glenn recorded his second score of the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter, scrambling in from 10 yards out.  The Anderson kick was good, giving him the PSAC all-time record for made point after attempts, passing West Chester's John Marotta (155; 1987-90).  Before the close of the half, Lock Haven's Mapes would split the uprights for field goals of 27 and 30 yards bringing the score to 27-12, SRU, at intermission.

            The Rock would hold onto the ball for just over six minutes on their first possession out of the half, driving 83 yards capped off with a two-yard touchdown pass from Randy McKavish to Joe Meyer.  This time, Anderson's converted PAT gave him the PSAC's all-time kick scoring record previously held by East Stroudsburg's Ed Detweiler (262 pts;1989-92).  Just 29 seconds later, following another fumble by LHU, The Rock's D.J. Flick found himself on the receiving end of a 29-yard pass from McKavish to record his second score of the game and increase the SRU cushion to 41-12. 

            A Lock Haven drive into Rock territory at the open of the fourth quarter would end in a 45-yard field goal for Mapes, his longest of the season.  That kick also captured a share as PSAC single-game record holder for field goals, tied with Clarion's Bill May (1977 vs. IUP). 

            Despite a slight 367-363 difference in total net yards, The Rock goes away with the victory led by quarterback Randy McKavish (11-16-1, 174 yds, 2 TD).  The running game was led by Stan Kennedy (8 carries, 56 yds, 1 TD) and Dorrian Glenn (10 carries, 33 yds, 2 TD), and in the air, SRU was led by Nate Stewart (4 rec., 52 yds) and Joe Meyer (3 rec., 25 yds, 1 TD).  D.J. Flick recorded 140 yards on two kickoff returns, including one for touchdown in the first quarter.  Defensively, SRU was led by safety Justin Walker (6 tackles, 2 TFL;-7 yds) and linebacker Mike Burns (6 tackles, 1 TFL; -2 yds).

            Lock Haven netted its best offensive output of the season with 367 yards, including 268 in the air, but was haunted by turnovers, fumbling the ball on four occasions all of which set up SRU scores.  Senior quarterback Ed Galiczynski and freshman receiver Marcus Burkley led the way, with Galiczynski going 13-for-23 for 215 yards, while Burkley tallied 191 yards receiving.  Running back Teon Higgs led the ground attack, carrying the ball 10 times for a total 42 yards.  On the defensive side, cornerback Quincy Teel led the Bald Eagles with eight tackles, and strong safety Joe Rose added seven stops. 

            Lock Haven will travel to Clarion University next Saturday, November 4, for a 1 p.m. game.  Slippery Rock will be at Millersville University next weekend with a 1 p.m. kickoff.

CALIFORNIA DEFEATS HAVEN IN PSAC WEST MATCH-UP
20-Point Second Half Lifts Vulcans Over Bald Eagles

(California, Pa.) - California University of PA (4-4, 1-3 PSAC West) defeated the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven University of PA (2-6, 1-3 PSAC West) this afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match-up.  

Cal running back Wesley Cates scored three touchdowns and covered 224 yards on 25 carries to lead the Vulcans to their fourth victory of the season.  California recorded 302 yards and four touchdowns with the rush, while holding the LHU running game to just 81 yards.  

LHU got on the scoreboard first, with a drive resulting from the defensive efforts of Bald Eagle safety Joe Rose, who intercepted a pass on LHU's 25-yardline to end California's first possession.  The Haven then drove 75 yards on six plays, with a 31-yard touchdown reception from Ed Galiczynski to Marcus Burkley to cap off the drive.  With the good point after attempt by Matt Mapes, The Haven took the early 7-0 advantage.  

The Vulcans rallied, however, and drove back downfield to set up a 16-yard touchdown run by Cates (Nida PAT good), knotting the game at 7-7 through to the end of the half. California broke the tie on the first drive of the third quarter, as Cates took the ball from 36 yards out and crossed into the endzone.  The Vulcans scored on their two possessions in the fourth quarter as well (Cates- 37 yard run; Brandon LeDonne - 4 yard run), buidling up a comfortable 27-7 lead.  

The Bald Eagles' last minute drive brought them all the way to the California 3-yardline, but time would run out before LHU could cross over into the endzone.  

LHU quarterback Ed Galiczynski threw for 136 yards on 14-for-23 passing with one touchdown.  The recipient of that touchdown pass, Marcus Burkley, covered 101 yards on seven receptions.  Leading the ground forces was freshman tailback Justin Marshall with 73 yards on 25 carries.  Defensively, linebacker Dan Wissinger tallied 11 tackles to lead the Bald Eagles.  Strong safety Joe Rose added eight tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.  Cornerback Rob Carey and defensive tackle Lloyd Brooks both contributed six stops apiece.

 BALD EAGLES WIN SECOND IN A ROW WITH 
24-20 VICTORY OVER CHEYNEY
The Haven's Marshall, Mapes Post Record-Setting Games

(Cheyney, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football team (2-5, 1-2 PSAC West) defeated Cheyney University (2-4, 0-3 PSAC East) to capture back-to-back wins for the first time since the 1997 season.  The win also extended LHU's win streak over the Wolves to six games.  

Haven running back Justin Marshall totaled two touchdowns (12- and 80-yard rushes) and 210 yards on 24 carries to help lift LHU over Cheyney.  Marshall's 210 rushing yards were the most gained in a single game by a Bald Eagle since 1981, when Mike Kresovich ran for 318 yards versus IUP.  

Cheyney had the lead at the half, 12-7, after jumping out to the early 6-0 lead.  The Wolves' Maurice Bibbs picked off a pass by LHU quarterback Ed Galiczynski and ran it back to the Haven 26-yardline.  One play later, CU's John Chestnut received a pass from Russ Sanders in the endzone.  

LHU battled back, scoring its first touchdown in the last drive of the first quarter when tailback Teon Higgs broke up through the middle unscathed, going 63 yards for the score. The Matt Mapes point after was good to put The Haven up, 7-6.  But as the second quarter winded down, Cheyney drove the length of the field and Kenard Edouard found his way into the endzone from nine-yards out to send CU into the locker room at the half with the 12-7 lead.

The third quarter belonged to LHU, as Marshall worked his way through the Cheyney defense for two scores, including one 80-yard breakaway.  Mapes hit a 39 yard field goal to open the fourth stanza and increase LHU's lead to 24-12.  The good kick gave him the all-time record at LHU for field goals made, now at 16.  

The Wolves fought their way back down the field two possessions later though, and Ladontay Bell pushed his way across the line for the score from the one-yardline.  Cheyney converted on the pass play for the extra two points to bring the score to 24-20.  

Lock Haven were unable to make anything happen on their next possession, then survived a scare from the Wolves in the final minutes.  CU drove deep into Haven territory, threatening to score for the win.  The LHU defense thwarted two CU pass attempts into the endzone, and on fourth and goal, Bald Eagle linebacker Chris Hileman sacked Cheyney quarterback Colin Smith to end their drive and take over the ball on downs.  The Haven held on for the final 51 seconds for the win. 

On the game, Lock Haven recorded 271 yards on the ground, including Marshall's 210 yards on 24 rush attempts and two touchdowns.  Higgs added 85 yards on 11 carries and one score.  Marcus Burkley led the receiving game with 47 yards on two catches.  Defensively, Pat Nixon led LHU with 8 stops.  Nate Eck posted 7 tackles, including three for loss and one sack, while Dan Wissinger had seven stops and a pass breakup.  Hileman had a total 7 tackles, including a team-high of five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Cheyney's Edouard put up 125 yards and a touchdown on 22 rush attempts, and quarterback Colin Smith added 158 yards on 8-for-16 passing.  Leading the Wolves' receiving corps were John Chestnut (3 receptions for 65 yards) and Ladontay Bell (2 receptions for 70 yards). The CU defense was led by Wes Setles, who recorded 11 stops, including four for loss and one sack. 

Lock Haven will travel to California (PA) University next weekend for a 2 p.m. contest.  Cheyney also takes to the road, traveling to Kutztown University for a 1:05 p.m. game.

 BALD EAGLES END 18 GAME SKID AGAINST EDINBORO
First-Year Head Coach Mark Luther Earns First Win

 (Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (1-5, 1-2 PSAC West) Bald Eagle football team held on for a 20-16 victory over the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (2-4, 1-2 PSAC West) Fighting Scots, giving Head Coach Mark Luther the first win of his coaching career at The Haven.  The win also puts an end to an 18-game winning streak by Edinboro in contests between the two squads. 

            LHU freshman tailback  Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/Dubois Area) crossed into the endzone three times, scoring his first collegiate points to lead the Bald Eagles to their first victory of the season.  Marshall totaled 15 carries for 71 yards, and also contributed to the air attack, tallying five receptions for 51 yards.

            The Haven fumbled the ball on the opening kickoff, but after a missed field goal attempt by Edinboro's Sean McNicholas, regained possession.  Five plays and 72 yards later, Marshall broke through the EUP defense for a 16-yard touchdown rush, and with the good PAT by Matt Mapes (Williamsport/Williamsport Area), The Haven took an early 7-0 lead.  On their ensuing possession, LHU quarterback Ed Galiczynski (Barnesboro/Northern Cambria) connected with Derrick Shields (Harrisburg/C.D. East) for a 64-yard reception, moving The Haven to the Edinboro 3-yardline.  Marshall took care of the rest, scoring his second touchdown with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter.

            After a scoreless second quarter, Edinboro came out of halftime fired up, going to tailback John Williams, who worked the ball up field, rushing for five consecutive plays from the LHU 32-yardline capped off by a 12-yard touchdown scamper to put the Fighting Scots on the board.  Edinboro opened up the fourth quarter with the ball just inches away from the endzone, and quarterback Steve Tryon kept for the score from one-yard out.  McNicholas' kick was good to knot the contest at 14-14. 

            With just over nine minutes to go in the game, The Haven pinned EUP back behind their own 15-yardline.  The Edinboro punt only made it to their own 39-yardline, and the Bald Eagles took over.  Marshall proved unstoppable again, working his way through the EUP defense on three rushes capped off by a nine-yarder for the winning score.  The Mapes PAT was blocked by Edinboro's Jeff Richardson, who ran the ball back for the extra two points to edge the Fighting Scots closer, 20-16. 

            On the next drive, Edinboro would take the ball all the way to the Lock Haven 25-yardline, but a holding call against EUP brought the ball back.  LHU's Ryan Matheson picked off EUP signal caller Tryon's next pass attempt, and with 23 seconds left, The Haven was able to let time run off the clock and capture their first win of the season.

            The Haven offense was led by Marshall with three touchdowns.  He managed 71 yards rushing on 15 attempts, and also had five catches for 51 yards.  Galiczynski threw for 220 yards on 16-of-22 completions.  Shields led receivers with four receptions for 96 yards, including a long of 64 yards.  The Haven defense was piloted by corner Quincy Teel (Coatesville/Coatesville), who had a game-high eight tackles.  Safety Ryan Matheson (Yardley/Fork Union Military Academy) had seven tackles and an interception, and end Nathan Eck (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) also contributed seven tackles. 

            Edinboro's John Williams and Bernard Henry both recorded 100-yard rushing games, Williams covering 109-yards on 26 carries and Henry adding 104 yards on 17 attempts.  Tryon was 5-for-16 with two interceptions in his second start for the Fighting Scots. Leading the defensive efforts were linebackers David Hart with seven tackles and Chris Wiggins with six stops, including one behind the line of scrimmage.

            Lock Haven next travels to Cheyney University on Saturday, October 14, for a 1 p.m. game.  Edinboro will remain on the road, traveling to Clarion University for a 2 p.m. contest.

While the Red Raider offense was clicking for 474 yards the defense limited Lock Haven to minus 12 yards rushing and 83 yards passing. It was only the sixth time in team history that Shippensburg limited an opponent to minus yardage on the ground and it was the fourth best performance ever, only 18 yards shy of the record set in 1954 against Southern Connecticut.

Shippensburg tied its team record of eight sacks in one game, a feat that was accomplished three other times in the past. Tackle Chad Oberholzer anchored the defense with three tackles for loss and two sacks for a total of 20 yards in losses. He tied the Red Raiders' single game record of five tackles behind the line of scrimmage

LHU quarterback Ed Galicynzki, who was forced to pass under pressure the entire game, finished up with nine completions in 21 attempts for 77 yards. Teon Higgs was the leading ball carrier for Lock Haven with 39 yards on 20 carries.  Marcus Burkley, back after sitting out the IUP game due to a shoulder injury, led the receiving corps with 40 yards from two receptions.  Defensively, linebacker Barry Byrd led The Haven with 10 tackles, and Derrick Metz and Ryan Matheson both added seven stops.  Jim Hanzley recorded his first interception of the season, running the ball back 21 yards.

Shippensburg boosted its record to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Lock Haven fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Red Raiders host Slippery Rock, Saturday, October 7, in their next game.

#5 INDIANA (PA) SHUTOUTS LOCK HAVEN IN PSAC WEST OPENER

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - No. 5-ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania (3-0, 1-0 PSAC West) shutout Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (0-4, 0-1 PSAC West) by a margin of 35-0 as the blue skies turned to rain for LHU's annual Homecoming game at Hubert Jack Stadium.

IUP benefited from a balanced attack, with sophomore running back Aamir Dew leading the way with a pair of scores and sophomore quarterback Brian Eyerman taking one in himself and also connecting with Carmelo Ocasio for a 17-yard touchdown reception. 

LHU Bald Eagles forced the Indians to punt the ball on their first two possessions, but IUP gained possession of the ball at their own 30-yard line after a missed field goal attempt by The Haven.  The Indians drove the length of the field, advancing into Haven territory after a 24-yard connection from Eyerman to Derek Brinkley.  Three successive rushes by Dew capped off the drive, hitting paydirt from the 7-yard line on his third attempt.  The PAT by Josh Telenko was good to give IUP the 7-0 advantage.

            Two more scores in the second quarter (Eyerman - 1-yard rush; Ocasio -- 17-yard reception from Eyerman) put the Indians on top, 21-0 at the half.  The Haven got pinned deep within its own territory to open the third quarter, and was forced to punt on its first possession.  IUP took over at the LHU 32-yard line, and Dew weaved into the endzone four plays later for his second touchdown of the game.

            IUP added one more score before the final horn, marching downfield after earning back the ball at their own 48-yard line following a fumble by LHU on a punt return.  Tailback Henry Lane recorded 13 successive drives from that point, getting the touchdown on a one-yard run with just over a minute remaining in the game. 

            Leading the way for the Indians' offense was Eyerman, who completed 11-of-16 passes for 148 yards with a touchdown passing and one rushing.  Lane collected 90 yards on 27 attempts with a score, and fellow tailback Dew posted 76 yards on 14 rushes with two touchdowns.  Ocasio led the receivers with three receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.  Defensively, IUP hampered the LHU running game, allowing only 32 yards rushing.  Safety Dave Deneen led the way with seven tackles, Mike Borisenko posted six tackles with three for loss and a sack, and Jeff Jackson recorded six stops, including one for loss, and an interception and return for 11 yards.

            Lock Haven was led by quarterback Ed Galiczynski, who completed 17-of-25 passes for 111 total yards.  Receiver Scott Anderson and tight end Ryan Lightner both tallied four receptions, with Anderson covering 42 yards and Lightner adding 31 yards.  On the ground, LHU was led by tailback Louis Mims, who carried the ball 12 times for a total 34 yards.  The LHU defense held Indiana in check, giving up 313 yards to a team that has averaged 544 yards over the past two contests.  Free safety Ryan Matheson led the LHU defensive forces with eight tackles.  Linebacker Dan Wissinger added seven, and corner Robert Carey contributed six, including one for loss and a pass breakup. 

The Indians next take on PSAC West foe Slippery Rock at home on September 30, while the Bald Eagles take to the road for a PSAC divisional contest versus Shippensburg University.

(Bloomsburg, Pa.) -- Lock Haven (0-3, 0-0 PSAC West), suffering from numerous injuries to key players, was outmatched this Saturday by a strong Bloomsburg University (1-2, 0-0 PSAC East) football team, dropping the PSAC crossover contest by the final score of 7-52.

The Bald Eagles lone score came from senior fullback Ray Riley (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic), who caught the eye of quarterback Ed Galiczynski (Barnesboro/Northern Cambria) for a 17-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.  The kick by Matt Mapes (Williamsport/Williamsport) was good for the extra point.

Offensively, senior signal caller Galiczynski netted 145 yards on 15-for-25 passing.  Ryan Lightner (Elizabethtown/Lower Dauphin), Scott Anderson (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview), and Jesse Nagle (Bellefonte/Bald Eagle Area) each recorded four receptions, and Teon Higgs (East Greenville/Upper Perkiomen) carried the ball on 14 rush attempts, posting a total 26 yards.  Robert Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) handled the majority of kickoff returns, running back five for 82 yards.  Defensively, free safety Ryan Matheson (Yardley/Fork Union Military Academy) led The Haven, tallying 17 tackles, including nine solo and one for loss.  Strong safety Joe Rose (Chambersburg/ Chambersburg) added 11 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception (no return).  

Sophomore punter Joe Walker (Camp Hill/East Pennsboro) will remain among the nation's leaders in the category, recording 292 yards on seven punts versus the Huskies.

The Bald Eagles will return home on Saturday, September 23 to face PSAC West opponent Indiana (Pa.) University for its annual Homecoming game.  Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at LHU's Hubert Jack Stadium.

Golden Bears Defeat Bald Eagles in PSAC Cross-Over Contest

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -- The visiting Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Golden Bears (1-1 overall) bounced back from a first-quarter deficit to overtake the Bald Eagles of Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (0-2 overall), 21-8, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference divisional cross-over contest. 

Lock Haven's Dan Wissinger tackled Kutztown's Yorel Prosser in the Kutztown endzone for a safety on the Golden Bears' opening drive of the game to put the Bald Eagles in the driver's seat early, 2-0.  LHU was forced to punt the ball in its opening drive, and it ended up paying off as punter Joe Walker sent the ball deep to the KU one-yardline. After a false start penalty, KU's Prosser attempted to sweep around wide left but was met by LHU's Wissinger in the endzone for the safety.  Later in the first, LHU placekicker Matt Mapes sent his first of two field goals through the uprights, this one a 27-yarder, to increase Lock Haven's lead to 5-0 by the close of the first stanza.

But the Golden Bears heated up in the second quarter, scoring on two of three drives, including a last second, 25-yard catch in the endzone by Phil Washington from Mike de Marteleire.  Kutztown scored on the previous drive as well, as Terry Robertson reeled in a 25-yard pass from De Marteleire at the 4:32 mark.  Washington struck again in the third quarter, finding himself on the receiving end of another De Marteleire touchdown pass, this one for 14-yards to cap off a 12 play, 50 yard drive by the Golden Bears.

The Haven threatened in the final stanza, but came up short with only a 39-yard field goal by Mapes to cap off LHU total game scoring at eight.  In two late quarter drives, LHU advanced as far as the KU 18 and three yardline, but was unable to convert.  Additionally, the Bald Eagle defense did not allow KU into LHU territory in the entire fourth quarter.

On the game, the Kutztown offense picked up 362 total net yards, including 225 in the air.  Quarterback Mike de Marteleire recorded 225 yards passing after completing 16 of 27 attempts with three touchdowns.  Phil Washington led KU in receiving, tallying 125 yards on seven receptions and two scores.  Terry Robertson added 86 yards on seven receptions with one touchdown.   On the ground, Yorel Prosser led the Golden Bears with 93 yards on 14 rushes.  Defensively, outside linebacker Earl Thornton led the way with 12 tackles, including eight unassisted.  Middle linebacker Alex Daecher added nine stops, and back-up linebacker T.J. Smith recorded seven.

Lock Haven put up 341 yards of offense, almost matching Kutztown's total in the air with 224 yards.  Senior quarterback Ed Galiczynski led the offense with 224 yards on 22-41 completions.  Freshman tailback Justin Marshall tallied 71 yards on 20 carries for the Bald Eagles, and also recorded three receptions for 16 yards.  Fullback Ray Riley carried the ball seven times while picking up 32 yards.  Marcus Burkley led receivers with 72 yards, and Nick Felus chipped in with 37 yards off of two receptions.  Defensively, free safety Ryan Matheson led LHU with eight tackles.  Defensive tackle Lloyd Brooks had seven stops, including two for loss (-12 yards) and a sack.  Strong safety Joe Rose also had seven tackles.  Kicker Matt Mapes went two-for-four on field goal attempts, just missing on attempts from 36 and 49 yards, but hit on distances of 27 and 39 yards.

Kutztown opens at home next Saturday, September 16, with Siena College at 1:35 p.m.  Lock Haven will take to the road for a contest against Bloomsburg University, that contest starting at 1p.m.

(Harrisonburg, Va.) - Lock Haven University Bald Eagle football fell to Division I-AA James Madison University, 72-0, in its 2000 season opener on the road in Harrisonburg, Va.  The Dukes put up 653 total yards against the Haven's  69 total net yards en route to the victory, and senior wide receiver Earnest Payton set JMU's career record for receptions by hauling in six for a current total of 162 receptions. 

Though the final score reflects somewhat harshly upon the performance of the Bald Eagles, the young squad is not the first to suffer at the hands of James Madison.  Since becoming Division I-AA in 1980, JMU has faced three Division II teams in season openers, and come away with a 3-0 record [Bloomsburg - 48-3 win in 1989; Lock Haven - 55-3 win in 1993; Shippensburg - 30-0 win in 1996].   

Red-shirt freshman Marcus Burkley handled the majority of return duties for the Bald Eagles, running back seven kickoffs for 145 yards, and one punt for 12 yards.  Burkley also led Haven receivers with two catches for 41 yards.  Freshman tailback Justin Marshall led the ground forces with 16 carries for 10 yards, undergoing a "baptism by fire" against the uncompromising JMU defense in his first collegiate start.  The LHU defense was led by sophomore free safety Jim Hanzely  and senior strong safety Joe Rose, a transfer from Penn State, who both collected a team-best eight tackles.
