BALD EAGLES MAKE IT FIVE STRAIGHT OVER MANSFIELD WITH 22-13 VICTORY

(Mansfield, Pa.) – Big defense and big plays helped lift the Lock Haven University football team (3-8, 1-5 PSAC West) to a 22-13 victory over conference cross-divisional rival Mansfield University (2-8, 1-5 PSAC East) in its final game of the 2001 season.  It was the fifth straight victory for Lock Haven over the Mountaineers and the fifth consecutive win on MU’s Van Norman Field.
Lock Haven’s win was highlighted by the performance of cornerback and return specialist Rob Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills), who scored twice, once on an 82-yard interception return and again off an 80-yard kickoff return. Carey shared the team-high of nine tackles and added two interceptions.
It was Carey’s interception return for touchdown that opened game scoring, running back the pick for 82 yards to give LHU the 6-0 lead after a failed extra point attempt.
Mansfield countered, however, assembling an 80-yard, 12-play drive capped off with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Travis Motley to Quame Patterson to edge ahead, 7-6.  On their next drive, the Mountaineers were force to punt the ball, giving the Bald Eagles field position at their own 42 yardline.
On their first play from scrimmage, Lock Haven’s Bill Witmer (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) found Derrick Shields (Harrisburg/C.D. East) open and connected for the 58-yard touchdown strike, moving LHU ahead once more, 13-7.  Mansfield rushed back and tied the ball game at 13-13 after driving the length of the field once again, as Motley and Patterson hooked up for the second time, this time a short six-yard pass for the score with just 14 seconds left in the first half.
With time left on the clock, Mansfield kicked off, and Lock Haven’s Rob Carey received the ball, slicing his way through the MU defense for an 80-yard touchdown return, his second on a kickoff this season. Following a failed PAT, LHU entered the half with a 19-13 lead.
The only scoring in the second half belonged to the Bald Eagles near the end of the third period. Lock Haven drove all the way to the Mansfield four-yard line but opted for the field goal.  Jonathan Miller (Acme/Meyersdale) did not disappoint, splitting the uprights from 27 yards out to up the margin to nine points and the final score to 22-13 in favor of the Bald Eagles.
The Bald Eagles were led by Carey, who recorded nine total tackles, two interceptions, including one returned for the score, along with 142 yards in returns, including the 80-yard kickoff return for touchdown.  Defensive tackle Lloyd Brooks (Williamsport/Williamsport) added eight stops, including an LHU season-best five for loss and two sacks.  In all, the LHU defense recorded three interceptions and 12 tackles for loss.
Offensively, Maurice Walker (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) posted his third game of the season over 100 yards rushing, earning 105 on the ground on 21 carries.  Receiver Derrick Shields posted his first touchdown of his LHU career en route to a total 88 yards on three catches.
Mansfield outgained Lock Haven by a final 415-265 margin, paced by 338 passing yards from quarterback Travis Motley.  Motley threw the ball 55 times, completing 32 passes and two touchdowns.  MU receiver Joe Bennett added 150 yards, making 11 receptions on the game.  Defensively, Dan Holland recorded a game-high of 14 stops.

CLARION FOOTBALL SHUTOUTS LOCK HAVEN, 13-0

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – A 13-point second quarter proved enough to carry the Clarion University football team (4-6, 2-4 PSAC West) past the Lock Haven University Bald Eagles (2-8, 1-5 PSAC West) this afternoon at Hubert Jack Stadium, 13-0.  It was Clarion’s first road win this season, and also broke a three-game losing skid by the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles dominated Lock Haven in nearly every offensive category, outgaining the Bald Eagles 427-106 on the game. Clarion also enjoyed a 20-5 advantage on first downs, including 14 on the rush.
Both teams traded possessions throughout the first quarter, playing to a 0-0 count.  Clarion threatened early by driving 46 yards in their second possession, but a fumble on the Lock Haven 23-yard line was picked up by LHU’s Charles Cannon, who ran it back 46 yards to the Golden Eagle 31 yard marker. Lock Haven opted for the rush on four straight plays, but the Clarion defense held strong and forced the turnover on downs.
A Bald Eagle fumble after a sack by CU’s Chris Janson on the Lock Haven 15-yardline to open the second quarter set off a string of LHU misfortunes and Clarion opportunities.  Following the LHU fumble which Clarion recovered, the Golden Eagles’ Demetric Gardner used his blockers to pave a path straight up the middle from 15 yards out for the score on the first play from scrimmage, giving CU the 7-0 advantage.

Haven QB #17 Brian Genis hands off to #32 Josh Stadulis in the second half against Clarion

The last two Clarion drives of the second quarter resulted in field goals by Jason Flora, one from 27 yards and the other from 21 yards out.  The pair of three-pointers gave the Golden Eagles the 13-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
The second half opened with more turnovers, as Clarion fumbled on the kickoff return and Lock Haven gained possession, only to turn around and hand the ball back over on another fumble.  The Lock Haven defense held off a number of deep drives by Clarion, forcing a turnover on downs, a fumble, and with a fourth quarter interception by cornerback Rob Carey in the endzone, held the Golden Eagles scoreless the rest of the way.  The Clarion defense was strong as well, shutting down the LHU offense for a total of just 106 net yards for the game.
Clarion running back Demetric Gardner moved into sixth place on CU’s all-time rushing chart, adding his 112 yards this afternoon for a total of 1,883 career yards on the ground.  Quarterback Adam Almashy recorded 164 yards on 13-for-20 passing, while receiver Mike McCullum had 65 yards on four receptions from Almashy.  Linebacker Chris Janson and cornerback Emil Johnson paced Golden Eagle defenders with 6.5 and 5.0 total stops, respectively.  Janson forced two fumbles and tallied one sack for a loss of six yards.
Lock Haven’s Maurice Walker covered 33 yards on the ground on 10 carries, and quarterback Johnathan Stahl was 4-of-14 for 44 yards passing.  Receivers John Caldwell (3 receptions, 34 yards) and Marcus Burkley (2 receptions, 32 yards) rounded out the LHU offensive effort.  Defensively, linebackers Derrik Metz and Chad Koleno led The Haven, recording 10.5 and 8.5 total tackles, respectively.  Cornerback Sheldon Gray notched four tackles for loss out of nine total stops.

BALD EAGLES DROP PSAC WEST MATCH-UP TO SRU, 28-0

(Slippery Rock, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University Bald Eagle gridders (2-7, 1-4 PSAC West) fell to Slippery Rock University (5-3, 3-3 PSAC West) on the road at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium this afternoon.
Despite entering halftime with just a 7-0 deficit, the Bald Eagles were unable to find their niche, as the Slippery Rock defense allowed only scattered short gains on the ground and an unproductive passing game plagued attempts to move the ball. By the close of the game, Lock Haven managed just a paltry 68 total yards to SRU's 347 yards.
Slippery Rock's Brandon Markus posted 169 yards rushing and scored three times, once in the first quarter then twice more in the final stanza, to lead The Rock's offense. Fellow running back Dorrian Glenn added 153 yards on the ground along with a touchdown.

HAVEN GRIDDERS SCORE FIRST CONFERENCE WIN
IN 24-21 VICTORY OVER CALIFORNIA (PA)

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football team (2-6, 1-3 PSAC West) scored its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division victory with a 24-21 defeat of California University of Pennsylvania (4-3, 1-3 PSAC West) this evening under the lights at Hubert Jack Stadium.    It was also first time the Bald Eagles had defeated California (Pa.) since the last time they played host, a 28-14 win in 1998.
The Bald Eagles netted just 164 total offensive yards to California’s 360 yards, but big help from defense and special teams gave the LHU offense prime field position several times leading to touchdowns.  Two Lock Haven touchdowns were called back after offensive pass interference calls.  Despite their loss, California’s running back Wesley Cates became the all-time PSAC rushing leader, surpassing Bloomsburg’s Irv Sigler (5105 yds) now with 5120 yards.

(below): Strong safety Jim Hanzely returned an interception 67 yards, setting up LHU's touchdown in the third quarter.

Lock Haven opened up the game with a 28-yard completion from Bill Witmer (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) to John Caldwell (Virginia Beach, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) and 10 plays later culminated in a 37 yard field goal by Jonathan Miller (Acme/Meyersdale) to put LHU on the scoreboard first, 3-0.  The Vulcans answered loudly, driving 67 yards on 10 plays for the score.  Wesley Cates accounted for 52 of the 67 yards, and quarterback Brandon LeDonne opted to run the ball in himself from 13 yards out for Cal’s first points.
The Bald Eagles worked the ball back down field in small gains in their second possession, and brought on Miller for a 26 yard field goal which cleared the posts but a roughing the kicker call on California advanced the ball to the five-yard line.  LHU chose to wave off the field goal and go for the touchdown, giving the ball to Maurice Walker (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) who sliced his way though to paydirt to give The Haven the 10-7 lead.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter, as the Vulcans’ Cates scored on a five-yard rush with 5:15 remaining in the half.  Lock Haven strong safety Renaldo Nichols (Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) intercepted a LeDonne pass at the California 40-yard line, and broke for the endzone, crossing unscathed to send the Bald Eagles into the half with a 17-14 lead.
Late in the third stanza, California threatened, advancing to the LHU 30 yard line.  On fourth and ten, LHU’s Jim Hanzely (DuBois/DuBois) picked off LeDonne at their own 18 yard line, and returned the ball 67 yards down the left sideline to within 20 yards.  On their second play from scrimmage, the Bald Eagles struck again with a 16-yard completion from Witmer to Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills), boosting the slim lead to a more comfortable 24-14 advantage.
Possession bounced back and fourth in the final quarter, and California was forced to turnover the ball on downs twice before it was able to work its way into the endzone one last time with just 1:35 remaining. Reserve quarterback Dustin Strayer completed Cal scoring with his nine-yard rush for score, brining the score to 24-21.
Lock Haven’s Witmer closed out the game with 118 yards on 11-of-20 passing.  Maurice Walker led the ground crew, covering 54 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries.  Marcus Burkley (3 receptions, 42 yds, 1 TD) and John Caldwell (3 receptions, 41 yds) paced the receiving corps.  Defensively, linebacker Chad Koleno (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) totaled 14 stops, including13 solo tackles.  Rob Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) recorded 11 tackles, including two for loss, and two pass breakups.
California’s Wesley Cates covered 210 yards in 41 rushing attempts en route to breaking the PSAC career rushing yards mark.  Fullback Scott Schrenker added 45 yards on 11 carries.  Linebacker Jim Lukacs led the Vulcans with 10 tackles, including eight solos and one for loss.
Lock Haven will travel to PSAC West opponent Slippery Rock University next Saturday, October 27, for a 1 p.m. game. California takes on Shippensburg University at home.

(Lock Haven, Pa.) - The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Bald Eagle gridders (1-6, 0-3 PSAC West) captured their first victory of the season with a 44-20 win over the visiting Cheyney University of Pennsylvania (0-5, 0-3 PSAC East) this afternoon in Hubert Jack Stadium.  The Bald Eagles had two running backs, Maurice Walker (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) and Melvin Kirby (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills), hit the century mark for the first time since the 1985 season (Pat Cahill and Eric Speese (151 and 104 yards, respectively, in a 27-22 loss to Edinboro).
Penalties hit both teams hard, as Cheyney gave up 129 yards and Lock Haven lost 93 on flags.  Despite the penalties, The Haven was able to post its best offensive output of the season with 426 yards and 44 points. (below) LHU's #80 Jonathan Miller kicking one of
his three field goals of the evening.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Lock Haven’s Melvin Kirby took the ball on the first play from scrimmage and covered the distance for the 67-yard touchdown run and the 10-6 LHU lead.  Another 35-yard field goal off the foot of Miller and a five-yard strike from quarterback Johnathan Stahl (Elizabethtown/Lower Dauphin) to Marcus Burkley (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) boosted The Haven’s lead to 20-6 by halftime.
Miller split the uprights again with just under five minutes remaining in the third period, this time from 27 yards out.  Late in the quarter, Cheyney got hit with holding and unsportsmanlike penalties on the same play forcing the punt, which LHU’s Rob Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) returned 50 yards to the Cheyney 25-yard line.  A personal foul on the Wolves brought LHU to the 13 yard line, and an 11-yard completion from LHU signal caller Bill Witmer (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) to Adam Angelici (Bethel Park/Bethel Park) inched the Bald Eagles to within two yards.  Three plays later, Witmer connected with John Caldwell (Virginia Beach, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) in the endzone to bring the score to 30-6.
Cheyney threatened in the final period, as Anthony Robinson scored twice on rushes of 13- and 4-yards, respectively.  Lock Haven’s running game matched Cheyney’s performance, however, as Maurice Walker wove his way into the endzone from 13 yards out and Melvin Kirby added a 24-yard score, bringing the game final to 44-20 in favor of the Bald Eagles.
Lock Haven posted a season-high 426 yards of total offense, including the best rushing performance of the 2001 campaign with 312 net yards.  Running backs Maurice Walker (20 carries, 194 yard, 1 TD) and Melvin Kirby (14 carries, 132 yards, 2 TD) led the ground attack.  Adam Angelici (3 receptions, 42 yards), Marcus Burkley (3 receptions, 33 yards, 1 TD), and John Caldwell (3 receptions, 29 yards, 1 TD) were the big contributors in the passing game, as were quarterbacks Johnathan Stahl (15-5-1, 49 yards, 1 TD) and Bill Witmer (8-5-0, 65 yards, 1 TD).  Defensively, The Haven was paced by Derrik Metz (Roaring Spring/Central) (6.5 tackles, 1 FF) and Michael O’Connor (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) (6.0 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack).  Lineman Chris Hileman (Claysburg/Claysburg-Kimmel) registered 3.0 stops, including two for loss (16 yards) and one sack.
Cheyney’s Anthony Robinson set the tone offensively, powering his way through the defense to score three touchdowns for CU’s only points of the game. Robinson finished with 209 yards on the ground on 33 attempts.  Signal caller Colin Smith recorded 146 yards on 10-of-27 passing.  Linebacker Marcus Turner hampered the LHU offense with 7.0 tackles, including two for loss (10 yards) and one sack.  Ian Allen added 5.5 stops to the effort.

BALD EAGLE GRIDDERS FALL TO #9 IUP, 42-0

University (2-0, 1-0 PSAC West).  The game was also the open of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action for both squads.
An Indiana interception set up IUP's first score, earning the ball at the LHU 32 yardline then punching it into the endzone with a 30-yard rush by Aamir Dew.  Turnovers again haunted Lock Haven in the second quarter, as two of three Indiana touchdowns resulted off possessions gained from a blocked punt and an interception.  In the second frame, Carmelo Ocasio and quarterback Brian Eyerman connected on a 41 yard aerial to bring the score to 14-0.  Tom Rebholz scored twice to close out first-half scoring, reaching paydirt on a one-yard run and a 10-yard pass from Eyerman to give IUP the 21-0 advantage.
Lock Haven made it into Indiana territory only twice in the second half, being forced to turn the ball over on downs both times. Indiana's Ocasio scored his second touchdown of the night on a 23-yard pass from Eyerman, and Henry Lane recorded a 1-yard scamper in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter to top off IUP scoring at 42.

BLOOMSBURG OUTLASTS LOCK HAVEN FOR 34-24 VICTORY

Bloomsburg retaliated by driving 60 yards on six plays topped off by another touchdown pass from Thompson, this time a five-yard connection with Rocco Forgione, to go into halftime with a 14-10 lead.  The Huskies piled on another score early in the third quarter, as tailback Arrastene Henry tallied a pair of one-yard touchdown scampers.
Lock Haven threatened, as Robert Carey returned a kickoff for 83 yards and the score, the first LHU kickoff return for touchdown since 1995 (Larry Lewis, 90 yd return for score over Mansfield).  Also in the third, receiver receiver John Caldwell reeled in a 43-yard pass from Bill Witmer for the score.

BALD EAGLES FALL TO #20 GOLDEN BEARS, 28-6

(Kutztown, Pa.) - A balanced offensive attack and a 21-point fourth quarter helped lead Kutztown University past Lock Haven University this afternoon, 28-6, at KU's University Field.
Deadlocked in a scoreless tie entering into the third quarter, both teams held off numerous offensive advances deep into opponent territory for the first 30 minutes.  Kutztown jumped on board in the third, however, as the Golden Bears drove downfield on their first possession of the quarter for the 25-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Rob Flowers and receiver Trevor Smith.
Kutztown repeated the scoring play early in the fourth, culminating a 66-yard, 7-play drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Flowers to Smith.  The Golden Bears scored again just 30 seconds later, taking full advantage of an interception as Yorel Prosser took only one try from scrimmage to scamper 64 yards into the endzone.
Lock Haven forced the KU punt on the ensuing possession, and Charles Cannon tagged LHU's second blocked punt of the game to give the Bald Eagles the ball at the Kutztown five yardline.  Two plays later, quarterback Brian Genis found Marcus Burkley alone in the endzone for the 5-yard touchdown strike to bring the score to 21-6.

BALD EAGLES drop SEASON OPENER TO D I-Aa POWER YOUNGSTOWN

(Youngstown, Ohio) - The 2001 Bald Eagle gridders knew their season opener was going to be an incredible task.  Still, despite the proverbial odds of the Division I-AA giant versus a middle-sized Division II program being stacked against them before they even set foot in Stambaugh Stadium, Lock Haven football displayed some positive glimpses of what the season could hold in store in this evening’s 38-7 loss to Youngstown State University.
YSU opened up scoring early in the game with a 51-yard drive down field topped off by a 34-yard pass from Jeff Ryan to Eugene Mintze in the first quarter.  On YSU's next drive however, Lock Haven defenders energized to stop the Penguins at the LHU two-yard line and forced the turnover on downs.
Into the second period, the LHU defense again highlighted the Bald Eagles’ performance, forcing three turnovers in Youngstown's five possessions. Robert Carey thwarted a YSU score by picking off a pass from Ryan at the YSU 43-yard line, and LHU linebacker Dan Wissinger also came up with a Penguin pass attempt, halting their next drive downfield midway through the second quarter.    Youngstown's ensuing drive met its end with a fumble recovered by LHU's DePhilip Jackson.  YSU's second period touchdown came after a 92-yard drive and a four-yard scamper by Dariu Peterson.
A Youngstown scoring assault ensued in the third quarter as they matched their first half score in just five minutes of action.  A 32-yard run by P.J. Mays made the score 21-0, and a blocked punt returned for touchdown brought the damage to 28-0 with nine minutes remaining in the third frame.

an 89-yard kickoff return by Andre Coleman (YSU’s first touchdown off a kick return since 1990), and a 42-yard field goal by Jake Stewart.
The Lock Haven defense was paced by safety Jim Hanzely (11 tkls) and corner Robert Carey (10 tkls, 1 INT, PD), followed by linebacker Chad Koleno's nine tackles.  Offensively, LHU receiver Marcus Burkley set the tone by posting 61 yards on seven receptions, while running back Melvin Kirby led the ground attack with 45 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Bill Witmer (19-6-0) accounted for 59 yards, while fellow signal caller Brian Genis (12-8-1) amassed 69 yards with one touchdown pass.
