(Lock Haven,
Pa.
) – The
Lock
Haven
University
of
Pennsylvania
football team
topped the Bald Eagle alumni, 29-7, in its third
annual Spring Game held today at Hubert Jack
Stadium in front of a packed stadium of fans.
Play was a bit rusty for the Alumni to
start, fumbling on the opening drive of the game
and turning it over to the Bald Eagles after Warren
Whitaker (Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) collected
the loose ball at the Alumni 15-yard line. Five
plays later the Bald Eagles found the endzone with
a air strike to tight end Jason
Walther (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) from
quarterback Brian
Camberg (Altoona/Altoona).
Haven kicker Dan
Hagerman (Scottdale/Southmoreland) was good
for the extra point, bring the score to 7-0.
The Alumni brought the ball up to their own
36-yard line on a 13-yard completion from John
Stahl to James Freeman ’90, but a fumble and two incompletions later were
forced to punt the ball away.
Starting the next drive from the LHU
18-yard line, the Bald Eagles picked up big
yardage off a 37-yard connection between Camberg
and Justin
Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois).
The Haven drove all the way to the 19-yard
line before the Alumni defense clamped down to
bring up fourth down and eight.
Opting for the field goal, Hagerman
nailed the 35-yarder to up the margin to 10-0 in
favor of the current Bald Eagle squad with
4:56
left in the first
period.
The Bald Eagles were on the move again to
start the second quarter when the Alumni defense
started to click.
Robert Lysek ’90 broke through the line for the sack and the
10-yard loss, then Albert
Jones ’99 forced the fumble two plays later
to turn the ball back over to the Alumni.
Unable to get any offense generated,
however, both sides would punt away the ball on
their following drives.
The Alumni regained possession near the
close of the half and drove up to the 11-yard line
after a pass interference call.
The Bald Eagle defense held strong,
however, and on 2nd and 10, linebacker Charles
Cannon (Braddock Hills/Woodland Hills)
deflected a pass which ended up in the hand of
cornerback Adam
Frazier (Dillsburg/Northern) for the
interception at 4:30.
Lock Haven would make good on the
possession, Maurice
Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) taking the
ball on his own for two pick-ups of 10 yards and
one 14-yard gain to work the ball up to within 11
yards. Quarterback
Rob Kristiniak (Flourtown/Springfield Township) then found Rafael
Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) in the
endzone, capping off the drive with a touchdown at
2:03
. The extra point
attempt failed, leaving the score at 16-0 by the
half.
Into the third quarter, the Alumni finally
put points up on the scoreboard with a touchdown
connection between John
Stahl and Jason
Kundtz ’99.
The Alumni would keep going back to Kundtz
on their opening drive of the half, the former
tight end coming up with three catches for big
gains prior to the touchdown. Just one yard out on
second down, Stahl fired a shot that dropped into
the back corner of the endzone where Kundtz hauled
it in for the score. The extra point kick by Matt Mapes ‘00 was good to bring the score to 16-7 with
3:08
left in the third
period.
Taking over possession in the fourth
quarter off an interception by Louis
Kohl (New Holland/Pequea Valley), the
Haven’s Kyle Miller (Halifax/Halifax) located Dwaine Berger (Normalville/Connellsville) to his left for a 69-yard
touchdown strike after Berger was able to shed his
defender before hitting open field.
The kick by Tom Spagnuolo (Williamsport/Loyalsock Twp) split the uprights,
bringing the margin to 23-7 at
8:50
in the fourth.
Defensive back Nick
Miller (Allentown/Parkland) intercepted an
Alumni pass on the next possession and returned it
49 yards to the one-yard line.
A goal line stop by Jason
Grassi ’01 held off the attack momentarily,
but the Bald Eagles’ Kyle Miller was able to
connect with Corey
Cicilioni (Lake Ariel/North Pocono) from two
yards out to boost the margin to 29-7.
The point after attempt was blocked and
picked out of the air by Angelo
Moultair ’00, who sent a lateral pass back
to Matt
Heiser ’97 before he was stopped by the
Haven defense around midfield.
A last minute drive by the Alumni came up
empty-handed, as the Bald Eagles claimed the 29-7
victory and avenged last season’s 14-13 Alumni
win.
