Linebacker Derek Harsch (25) had a Bald Eagle season-best 14 tackles.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Down by 23 points at the end of the first quarter, the Lock Haven University football team (3-7, 1-4 PSAC West) wouldn’t go down without a fight on Senior Day, taking the final three periods from California University (Pa.) (6-3, 2-3 PSAC West) 24-22 today in the 45-24 loss at Hubert Jack Stadium. Sophomore wideout Adam Lawrence (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hauled in six passes for a career-best 103 yards and a touchdown.

Senior quarterback Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) balanced three interceptions with three touchdowns—all in the second half—and 267 yards, his second-best output of the year. Four different receivers made catches of over 24 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown catch by Kellen Bush (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills).

The dubious start began on the Haven’s first possession, after three unsuccessful plays, LHU lined up for a punt. After the snap went over Dan Hagerman’s (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) head, he kicked it out of the back of the end zone to prevent a sure touchdown for the Vulcans.

Cal U took the ensuing safety kickoff 57 yards in six plays, capped by a six-yard touchdown catch by Garvin Graves, set up by a 40-yard run by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) leading rusher Antoine Bagwell.

After a Storino interception, freshman Cal U quarterback Matt Humbert hit Marc Huddleston for a 31-yard score—a one-handed grab in the back of the end zone—making it 16-0. The Vulcans finished their first-quarter surge on a 17-yard dash by Bagwell.

The Bald Eagles started their first successful drive in the first quarter, with Storino hitting sophomore wide receiver Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) for 24 and an acrobatic 25-yard catch in traffic by senior Justin Marshall (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) to set up a 29-yard field goal by Hagerman.

LHU was knocking at the door after a muffed-punt recovery by senior Will Jones (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), but Derek Marshall (Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area) coughed up the ball at the two yard line, ending the Bald Eagle scoring chance.

The LHU run defense put the reigns on the Vulcans, forcing a three-and-out that gave the Bald Eagles the ball at midfield with just over a minute left in the half. Storino threw his second interception of the day, ending another drive into Cal U territory.

Lock Haven’s defense continued their success out of the lockerroom, allowing just one Vulcan first down in the entire third quarter. LHU cut the score to 23-10 on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Bush, the highlight pass of the day.

The freshman receiver went to the flag on the left side, noticed the throw was a little short, slipped around the defender and caught the Storino pass for the first touchdown of Bush’s career.

Cal U answered on its first possession of the final quarter, as Bagwell ran for his second of three scores. Storino took the team on his hip, hitting Lawrence for 16 and 27-yard passes and capping the six-play 69-yard drive on a 12-yard pass to Smith, cutting the Vulcan lead to 31-17.

After the defense stopped Cal U on their next possession, Vulcan punter Rusty Springer pooched a punt to the Lock Haven one yard line. Working out of his own end zone, Storino threw his third pick, setting up a Bagwell 17-yard run spreading the lead to 38-17.

Bagwell’s excessive celebration penalty combined with a 10-yard kickoff return and a 15-yard late-hit penalty on the Vulcans—one of their 13 penalties for 149 yards—gave the Haven possession at midfield.

Storino and Lawrence took advantage, connecting for consecutive 14 and 23-yard passes, the latter a touchdown catch, cutting the lead to 38-24.

The Vulcans recovered the on-side kick, eventually expanding their lead to the final of 45-24 on a run with three seconds left in the game.

On his second carry of the game, senior Maurice Walker (N. Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) became the all-time school leader in carries, breaking a 24-year-old record. Walker finished the day with 38 yards on 15 carries.

On the defensive side, sophomore Derek Harsch (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) made a Bald Eagle season-best 14 tackles. Seniors Jarrod Hendricks (Rockton, Pa./DuBois Area) and Brian Lumpkin (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) each chipped in with nine stops, Lumpkin adding 2.5 tackles for loss.

Lawrence, Storino, Bush, Hagerman, Smith, Justin Marshall, Derek Marshall, Jones, Walker, Harsch, Hendricks, Lumpkin and the rest of the Bald Eagles will wrap up their season at Edinboro University on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
