(Harrisonburg, Va.) – After three hours that felt a little more like three days, the final margin of Lock Haven University’s (1-1) gridiron contest against Division I-AA James Madison University (1-0) came to 62-7 in favor of the Dukes.
Outmatched physically and left without much of a ground game due to a strong JMU rush defense, the Bald Eagles still fought hard and covered more yardage during the first half than they did over the entire game in the 2000 match-up, totaling 140 yards as compared to a paltry 69 yards four years ago. Back-up quarterback Brian Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) accounted for 111 yards early, connecting on seven of 10 including a 55-yard strike to Sean Sanderson (Enola/East Pennsboro).
James Madison got on the scoreboard quick, with tailback Alvin Banks working both the sideline and forcing it through the middle before closing in on paydirt from two yards at 11:40. The Dukes then added 17 more unanswered points before the Haven was finally able to tack some points on to its end of the score.
Sophomore receiver Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) capped off the Bald Eagles’ only scoring drive of the game by hauling in a four-yard catch over his left shoulder, holding on for the touchdown despite being hit in the air as he came down.  Camberg and red-shirt freshman receiver Sanderson jump-started the drive with a 55-yard strike on Camberg’s first play after entering the game for an injured Troy Wile (Fayetteville/Chambersburg).  Camberg connected with Adam Lawrence (Hanover/Delone Catholic) in the same drive for 16 more yards, and a 10-yard rush by Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois) gave the Bald Eagles the field position needed for the touchdown.

Just as quickly, however, James Madison continued its offensive push, adding another touchdown before the close of the half to go ahead 31-7.

The Dukes would score two quick touchdowns in the third quarter, Matt LeZotte hitting Nic Tolley deep in the back of the endzone from eight yards out. JMU regained the ball after an interception, and less than a minute later, Banks took the handoff from LeZotte, sweeping left outside the hash mark before cutting through the corner of the endzone for his second score of the night.
The Dukes’ Will Patrick reeled in a 13-yard touchdown pass at 4:55.  D.D. Boxley added another six with a catch on the following drive from six yards out, adding to the lead, 59-7.  The scoring wrapped up with a 37-yard field goal by David Rabil in the fourth quarter, bringing the final tally to 62-7.
Lock Haven totaled 198 yards, including 160 passing, compared with James Madison’s 609 yards. Leading Bald Eagle tailbacks was Maurice Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills), who had 24 of the Haven’s 38-yard total on the ground. Camberg went 9-for-17 for 139 yards and one touchdown, and Lawrence collected five passes for 63 yards to lead the receivers.  Defensively, Jon Nalewak (Shamokin/Shamokin) recorded a game-high of 12 stops including eight solo hits. David Show (Mill Run/Connellsville Area) had 11 tackles, including one interception that the red-shirt freshman safety ran back 40 yards.
JMU had two 100-yard rushers, Maurice Fenner (165 yds, 1 TD) and Alvin Banks (108 yds, 2 TD), and both quarterbacks, Justin Rascati (18-10-1, 136 yds, 3 TD) and Matt LeZotte (13-8-0, 121 yds, 1 TD), also went over 100 yards. Tony LeZotte and I. Dottin-Carter each contributed six tackles to lead the Dukes’ defense.
Lock Haven next returns home to face Kutztown University on Sat., Sept. 11, at 4 p.m. in Hubert Jack Stadium.
