(Lock Haven, Pa.) – Bald Eagle turnovers led to a pair of Kutztown University touchdowns and as the Golden Bears out-distanced Lock Haven, 28-20, this evening at Hubert Jack Stadium. Kutztown improves to 2-1 on the season while the Haven is now 1-3 overall.
Both teams had 100-yard rushers, Kutztown’s Tony Bria covering 117 yards and had two touchdowns while the Haven’s Maurice Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) posted his second game this season over the century mark with 108 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown.
Kutztown quarterback Jeremy Copeland took the ball into the endzone himself early in the second quarter to crack open the game’s scoring. The point after was blocked by Lock Haven’s Sheldon Gray (Norristown/Norristown), making the score 6-0.
The Bald Eagle response came quickly in the form of a touchdown by Maurice Walker, who split the defense for a six-yard scramble through the middle for the score at 9:16 left in the half. With the good extra point by Dan Hagerman (Scottdale/Southmoreland), Lock Haven took over the lead, 7-6.
On a late possession gained following an interception by corner Mike Nesby (Rankin/Woodland Hills), the Bald Eagles drove down to the KU seven-yard line. On second-and-one, the pass from Brian Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) to Kevin Scheidler (Millersburg/Millersburg) was caught but then fumbled as Scheidler was hit. Justin Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois Area) was there to scoop up the loose ball, darting into the endzone with it for the score with just 29 seconds left in the half.
With just 69 of its 207 yard game total on the ground covered in the first half, Kutztown gave its running backs the green light in the second half as two of three touchdowns were scored via the run. The Golden Bears put up 19 points in the second half to regain the lead as they starting off in the air, however, with a five-yard strike from Jeremy Copeland to Mike Zulkowski, bringing KU to within two points, 14-12.
Lock Haven countered with a 29-yard field goal by Hagerman, upping the margin to 17-12 with just under eight minutes on the clock.

Kutztown’s Tony Bria scored the first of his two touchdowns at 4:38 in the third quarter, tacking on six points to the Golden Bear tally with a five-yard run. Despite the failed two-point conversion attempt, the touchdown bounced the lead back to the visitors, 18-17. On the following kickoff, the Haven fumbled, turning the ball back over to the Bears with 4:30 left in the quarter. Bria would cap off that drive as well, pushing in from two yards out to boost the lead to 25-17 with one quarter left to play.
Kutztown’s Matt Scartozzi split the uprights from 37 yards to make it 28-17 midway through the final stanza, but the Haven’s Hagerman had the answer in a 32-yarder at 2:59 to cut the deficit to 28-20 as time started to fade.
The Lock Haven defense held the Bears back in Kutztown territory on the next possession to force a quick four and out. Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) broke open for a 33-yard punt return to the Kutztown 40-yard line in an effort to galvanize a last-minute rally. Smith then caught a pass from Camberg on the next play and took it 16 yards. An 11-yard rush by Camberg brought the Haven up to within 13 yards of scoring. A seven-yard completion to Kellen Bush (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills) moved the Bald Eagles up even closer. Two incomplete passes, including one that was caught but ruled out of bounds just outside the endzone, brought up fourth down for LHU with a minute left to play. Kutztown’s Nate Baublitz would smother the opportunity for the Haven come-back, however, cutting through the line to put the hit on Camberg for a loss of yardage and the turnover on downs with just under a minute remaining.  The Bears proceeded to run down the clock until the end, taking away the 28-20 win.
Kutztown was at the high end of the 341-301 margin in yardage, including 207 on the ground. Tony Bria netted 117 yards rushing on 28 carries along with two scores, while Stephen Gammage added to the damage with 77 yards via the run. Quarterback Jeremy Copeland was 9-for-22 for 134 yards and a touchdown, while receiver James Brooks reeled in four passes for 44 yards. Linebackers Drew Hicks (11 TT) and Greg Mitchell (10 TT) both paced the KU defenders.
Lock Haven’s Maurice Walker went over 100 yards for the second time this season with a total of 108 yards on 26 carries with one touchdown. Walker also totaled 110 yards on kickoff return duty including one runback of 57 yards. Sophomore Brian Camberg threw for 202 yards and one touchdown, completing 17-of-36 attempts without an interception. Leading a lengthy receiving corps was Rafael Smith, who collected six passes for 76 yards.  Linebacker Brian Lumpkin (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) was the Haven leader defensively with 11 stops, including nine solo hits. Defensive end Brad Sones (Elysburg/Southern Columbia) (9TT, 1 FF) and linebacker Mike Slatcoff (Sandy Lake/Cochranton) (9 TT) also helped pace the defense.
Lock Haven will travel to Bloomsburg University on Sat., Sept. 18, for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. Kutztown next hosts Mansfield University on Sat., Sept. 25, at 1:05 p.m.
