Bald Eagle running back Maurice Walker ran for 149 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Key penalties and big-play strikes from both the running and passing games helped the Lock Haven University football team (2-4, 0-1 PSAC West) get their first win in five games. The offense clicked on all cylinders, as Maurice Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) ran for 149 yards and a game-winning touchdown and Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) threw for 310 yards and two scores.

Lock Haven took an early advantage, as Storino capped a 12-play, 78-yard drive with a 23-yard strike to Adam Lawrence (Hanover/Delone Catholic).  On a drive that started at the end of the first quarter, highlighted by four Walker gains, sophomore kicker Dan Hagerman (Scottdale/Southmoreland) increased the LHU lead by three with a 40-yard field goal his longest kick of the season.

Perhaps resting on their 10-point laurels, the kickoff coverage team allowed Ronnie Montomery a 100-yard kickoff return, a school-record trip, cutting the lead to 10-7.

After an LHU punt, Mountaineer quarterback Matt Hildebrand led his squad to gain their first lead, hitting a big 42-yard pass to Kody Crispell and an 11-yard touchdown to Joe Bennett to make it 13-10. Hagerman had a chance to tie the game at the end of the half, but missed a 44-yarder wide right.

Defenses took over for most of the third quarter, including an LHU interception by Jon Nalewak (Shamokin/Shamokin Area) at the Mansfield 48-yard line. LHU couldn’t capitalize, eventually missing a 46-yard field goal.

Mansfield then extended their lead to 20-10 on a 15-play, 86-yard drive capped by a Hildebrand touchdown run.

Down two scores with 7:20 left in the contest, LHU got a big 38-yard kick return from Walker and finished with a 16-yard pass from Storino to Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills), cutting the deficit to three.

The ensuing Mountaineer drive was a three-and-out and on the punt, Sheldon Gray (Norristown/Norristown) snuck through the line to get a hand on the kick, resulting in just a 14-yard punt, downed at the Mansfield 49.

Storino and Smith connected again for a touchdown, putting the Bald Eagles back in front at 24-20. After an unsuccessful drive by each squad, Mansfield got the big play they needed, a 51-yard pass from Hildebrand to Bennett, giving MU a three-point lead with just 2:07 left.

LHU’s two minute drill went into effect, as Storino hit big 22-yard strikes to both Smith and Kellen Bush (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills) to set up a 24-yard, game-tying Hagerman field goal with 13 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime for the Bald Eagles.

Mansfield took the first possession, scoring on an apparent touchdown pass to Bennett that was called back on offensive pass interference. MU would have to settle for a field goal.

LHU’s possession began with three unsuccessful plays, setting up a field goal for the tie. As the Bald Eagles lined up for the kick, the Mountaineers were changing personnel and called a timeout, but they didn’t have any left.

MU was penalized, resulting in a first down for LHU. On the next play, Walker busted loose for 12 yards, a touchdown and the second win of the season for LHU.

Smith had six grabs for 92 yards and two touchdowns for LHU, joining the three other receivers with more than 50 yards in the game. Defensive leaders for the Haven were Warren Whitaker (Wilkes-Barre/GAR Memorial) and Cory Gildea (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) with seven tackles apiece.
