SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Stricken by the turnover bug and a balanced Red Raider offensive attack, the Lock Haven University football team (2-5, 0-2 PSAC West) fell victim to an angry No. 19 Shippensburg University squad (6-1, 2-1 PSAC West). LHU threw four interceptions en route to a 45-7 rout.

Scorned by their first loss of the season to Indiana University a week ago, the Red Raiders were a team on a mission today, scoring on five of their first seven possessions in the game and gaining 242 yards on the ground to go with 245 passing yards. While the LHU defense was at times porous, the offense never seemed to get on track either.

LHU signal caller Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park), fresh off a 318-yard, three-touchdown performance at Mansfield University, coughed up four interceptions. Storino’s first was returned by John Sharbaugh for a touchdown, the second pick came at the Shippensburg nine-yard line halting LHU’s first potential scoring drive.

The third interception resulted in another Red Raider touchdown on a 17-yard pass to Pat Ferguson and while the fourth didn’t result in a score, it came when the score was 31-0, and marked Storino’s second-to-last drive at the helm of the Bald Eagle offense.

The ground game suffered as well, with a 242-22 deficit. The highlight of the running game was sophomore Derek Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois Area), who gained 28 yards on nine carries in mop-up duty. Senior Maurice Walker (N.Braddock/Woodland Hills) managed just one yard on 30 carries.

Shippensburg’s rushing success came from many contributors. Four Red Raider ballcarriers crossed the goalline, including leading rusher John Kuhn (17 car., 69 yds.).

The Bald Eagle offense showed signs of life late in the fourth quarter on a 13-play, 57-yard drive that ended with a Rob Kristiniak (Flourtown/Springfield Township) quarterback sneak for their lone touchdown.

Kristiniak got it done on that drive through the air, hitting Dwaine Berger (Normalville (Connellsville) twice for 20-yard strikes.

Kristiniak finished with 55 yards on 4-of-8 passing and sophomore Rafael Smith (Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) hauled in three passes for 32 yards to lead the team in passing categories.

On the defensive side, senior Sheldon Gray (Norristown/Norristown) split the team lead in tackles with David Show (Mill Run/Connellsville Area), as both men finished with eight. Gray also had a forced fumble, which he recovered, to save a touchdown on the Red Raider’s first drive of the second half.

Storino, Marshall, Walker, Kristiniak, Berger, Smith, Gray, Show and the rest of the Bald Eagles return home for their homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. against Clarion University.
