Head coach John
Klacik and special teams coach Brian Jenkins
know that in order to beginning a winning tradition, the
Lock Haven University football team needs to excel at
every aspect of the game, with particular focus on
special teams.
“Success in special
teams starts with mechanics and fundamentals,” said
Klacik. “If we can get protection from our lines, it
gives our specialists the confidence to get the job
done.”
Junior
Dan Hagerman (Scottdale,
Pa./Southmoreland) returns for his third season as
full-time kicker and punter, already making noise in the
Bald Eagle record books. He was excellent in his kicking
duties, hitting all 18 PATs with a 9-of-17 mark for
field goals. He also averaged 34.5 yards-per-kick on 61
punts in 2004.
“Dan’s a hard worker
who doesn’t mind the pressure a kicker can be under,”
said Klacik. “His punting allows our defense a
head-start in winning the field-position battle. I’m
excited about seeing Dan reach his full potential.”
Newcomer
Brendon Pickel
(Easton, Pa./Easton Area) will handle the kickoff
duties, supplying his big boot for the kickoff coverage.
Two long snappers
continue their battle for the center duties, as
sophomores Todd
Smoker (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Sean M.
Sanderson (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) will
compete for the spot.
Classmate
Adam Lawrence
(Hanover, Pa./Shippensburg University) will handle
the punt-return duties, his first time handling punts
since he played for Delone Catholic High School.
Freshman Chris
Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) and junior
Mike Nesby
(Rankin, Pa./Woodland Hills) will also see a bunch
of returns here.
“With punt returns,
the catch is the most important part,” Klacik revealed.
“Anything you get from a return is just a bonus after
that.”
Newcomer
Alvin Thomas Jr.
(Johnstown, Pa./Greater Johnstown) and junior Nesby
join All-PSAC wide receiver
Rafael Smith
(Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) in a trio that will see
plenty of kick returns this season. Nesby had 17 returns
in 2004 for an average of 17.4 yards. Smith had two
chances with a 12.5 average.
“Both Nesby and Thomas are quick and
elusive guys,” said Klacik. “Rafael gives this group
some experience and may see time here as well.”
