LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (1-0) downed Shepherd University (0-2) 1-0 today at home in its 2008 season opener.
The game marked the first women’s soccer game on the newly resurfaced Hubert Jack Stadium, making the Lady Eagles the first team to win at Hubert Jack since renovations.
Lock Haven looked dominating today and quickly took control of the match from the opening whistle.
LHU outshot Shepherd 20-2.
The Lady Eagles were outshooting Shepherd 15-1 when their hard work finally paid off in the 73rd minute.
After drawing a corner kick, senior captain Lindsey Blessing (Fredericksburg, Pa./Governor Mifflin) decided to play a short ball that was quickly back at her feet just outside the 18-yard box, where she served a beautiful ball to the back post.
Sophomore Caitlyn Slattery (Williamsport, Pa./UMBC) was on the spot to drill a header past the Shepherd keeper.
Lock Haven had plenty of other strong scoring opportunities and dictated the flow of the game throughout, earning the season opening victory at home in front of large crowd.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Gannon University for Pennsyvlania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.
