LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (2-3, 1-1 PSAC West) got an all important win this afternoon in the Bald Eagles 2008 home opener.
LHU downed California (Pa.) University (2-2-1, 1-1-1 PSAC West) 1-0 in thrilling fashion as the Bald Eagles earned the winning goal less than two minutes into the first sudden victory overtime period.
After starting the season 0-3, LHU has won two straight and today marked a crucial win in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.
The Bald Eagles looked excited to finally play in front of the home supporters as they dominated the flow of the match from the opening whistle applying constant pressure.
Lock Haven created chances in the first half including two very solid opportunities by Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Kevin McCune (Butler, Pa./Butler).
The score remained scoreless after 90 minutes despite opportunities coming from both sides.
LHU goalie Billy Trimble(Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) made five saves in 90 plus minutes of work.
Less than two minutes into the overtime period LHU drew a free kick and senior Paul Huckett (Grimsby, England/Grimbsy College) played a beautiful ball in toward the six-yard box where it was knocked home by a Cal defender for the own goal
The Bald Eagles are back in action on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Molloy College for a non-conference match.
