Women’s soccer rolls past UPJ 3-0, Dodson nets pair of goals

Melinda Dodson set to receive a pass in tonight's game, she scored a pair of goals to lead The Haven.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (3-3) shutout the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (2-3) 3-0 at home in Hubert Jack Stadium tonight.

The Lady Eagles have won their last two matches by a combined score of 6-1 as they’ve netted a trio of goals in each of the last two contests.

Leading the way tonight was junior Melinda Dodson (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land), who netted a pair of goals.

Lock Haven wasted little time getting the scoreboard, taking control of the match from the opening whistle.

In just the second minute of play sophomore Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) collected a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and sent it far post into the side netting.

Her strike gave LHU the early 1-0 lead.

Dodson scored the first of her two tallies in the 34th minute as Lock Haven’s pressure broke down the UPJ defense.

Three Haven players broke in past the Pitt-Johnstown defense and sophomore Jen Williams (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) slotted a ball left to right, across the goal to a streaking Dodson, who drilled the ball into an open net.

The first half ended with LHU leading 2-0 at half.

The Lady Eagles pressure continued in the second as they rattled off nine shots.

Dodson had several strong chances and finally put the icing on the cake with 11 seconds left in the game.

Freshman Kim Bentley (Springdale, Pa./Springdale) made three saves on the way to the shutout.

LHU head coach Heather Davis was particularly pleased with the effort of Bentley, who came up big when she was needed.

“I was impressed with her focus,” added Davis.

Davis was also pleased with some her younger players and thought her entire team was mentally strong and prepared for the contest tonight.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. when they host Clarion University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.
