CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (16-1) suffered its first defeat of the 2008 season tonight, as the Lady Eagles fell to the 24th ranked University of Indianapolis in a tight 3-2 match at the California (Pa.) University tournament.
Lock Haven won the first two games of the match (25-22 and 25-23), but dropped the next three (15-25, 22-25 and 15-17).
All five games proved to be exciting, as all were close including the decisive game five, where both teams were tied at 15-15.
Indianapolis is ranked No. 24 in latest edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches poll and with the win over LHU improves to 14-3 overall on the year.
Earlier today Indianapolis downed host California 3-1. California is ranked 13th nationally and the loss marked the first of the year for Cal.
Leading the way today for the Lady Eagles was Stacey Borgia (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail), who had an all-around solid outing. She led the team with 16 kills while hitting .343.
Borgia also had a team-high eight digs and five block assists.
Juliana Nascimento (Guarulhos, Brazil/Seward) recorded 13 kills and hit .312
Christie Naumann (Charters Towers, Austrailia/Gladstone) and Christian Laury (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had 12 and 10 kills, respectively.
Fabianna Gomez (Montevideo, Uruguay/Consejo de E.S.) had a team-high 46 assists and also contributed four block assists.
Haley Gribler (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) had two aces for LHU tonight.
The Lady Eagles are back in action tomorrow at California (Pa.) University when they take on Mercyhurst University at 1 p.m. At 4 p.m. they’ll face off against former Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division foe Cal.
