Lady Eagles fall to Mercyhurst 1-0 in PSAC West clash

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (4-6, 2-5 PSAC West) dropped a hard-fought battle to visiting Mercyhurst University (6-2-2, 4-1-2 PSAC West) 1-0 today at Hubert Jack Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.

With the loss the Lady Eagles fall to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

Mercyhurst, who was ranked in the top-25 until this week scored the only goal of the match in the 40th minute of play after Sarah Powell beat LHU goalie Hayley Zinn (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing).

Zinn, a freshman made her fourth start of the year between the pipes and played well. She made seven saves over 90 minutes of play.

Offensively, LHU played very well at times and created several good chances.

Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and Melinda Dodson (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) led offense as both played well for LHU and looked to try and spark the attack throughout.

Sophomore Caitlyn Slattery (Williamsport, Pa./UMBC) turned in an all-around solid outing for The Haven.

LHU head coach Heather Davis was pleased with her team’s effort today.

“We played with a lot heart and passion,” Davis said while noting that the Lady Eagles really stepped it up during the second half.

She feels that today’s second half against this talented Mercyhurst squad should give them more confidence as the Lady Eagles look to move forward.

Davis and her squad are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. when LHU travels to Mansfield University.
