LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (5-6) shut out visiting Mansfield University (4-7) 1-0 today at Hubert Jack Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled for Mansfield, but because of poor field conditions it was moved to The Haven. The Lady Eagles certainly took advantage of playing in front of the home crowd and earned a hard-fought 1-0 win.
Sophomore forward Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored the games only goal of the match and her team-high fifth of the season.
Gordon’s strike came in the 66th minute of play off an assist from freshman Janine McCarthy (Jefferson, Mass./St. Peter Marian). Twenty yards from the goal, Gordon collected McCarthy’s pass and set it to the upper corner, out of the reach of a stretching keeper.
Despite only putting home one goal, Lock Haven certainly had their chances in a game that was tied 0-0 at halftime. LHU outshot Mansfield 10-5.
Carly D’Orsaneo (Elverson, Pa./LivingWord) looked to put the Lady Eagles up early as she drilled a ball off the crossbar less than 15 minutes into the game.
Goalie Haley Zinn (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) was credited with one save in the match.
Defensively LHU got solid outings from Caitlyn Slattery (Williamsport, Pa./UMBC) and Courtney Johnson (Alexandria, Va./Edison).
LHU head coach Heather Davis was pleased with her team’s performance today, calling it a “gritty win.”
“We accomplished goals that we set before the game and I’m pleased with the win,” Davis said.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Gannon University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
