LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (10-3) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting and 14th ranked Penn State University (7-4) today on LHU’s Charlotte Smith Field.

Freshman Kaitlyn Smyth (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) scored the Lady Eagles only goal, marking the first of her Haven career.

Sophomore goalie Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made two saves in the cage for LHU.

Lock Haven was down 1-0 halftime despite tremendous pressure to start the contest.

The Lady Eagles quickly took control of the match and dominated possession in the early going.

It looked as if LHU’s early pressure was going to pay off as they almost went up 1-0 after Casey Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) drilled a shot on goal off of a penalty corner. PSU goalie Jen Beaumont was however up to the task, making the first of her four saves in the game.

Lock Haven’s defense came up big with about 17 minutes to play in the first. Amanda Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) knocked a shot out of the air while standing on the goal line to keep the game tied at 0-0.

Shortly thereafter PSU finally snuck one home as Aubrey Aden-Buie knocked in a loose ball in front of the net to put Penn State up 1-0 in the 22nd minute of play.

Early in the second half PSU went up 2-0, but Lock Haven quickly responded and cut the deficit to one goal.

Smyth’s strike in the 49th minute cut the lead to 2-1. The goal came off a penalty corner pass from Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights).

Penn State added its third goal in the 51st minute of play.

Both PSU’s goals in the second half came off of corner plays.

Lock Haven is back in action on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. when the Lady Eagles travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) University for their Northeast Conference (NEC) opener.
