LHU Soccer - Women

Lady Eagles down Mercyhurst 2-1 in OT

ERIE, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (6-8, 3-7 PSAC West) downed Mercyhurst University (7-4, 5-2-3 PSAC West) 2-1 in overtime today on the road in an all-important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division clash.

With the win the Lady Eagles avenge an earlier 1-0 setback that came at the hands of Mercyhurst, who was been ranked among the nation’s best most of the season. MU is currently ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division II Atlantic region.

Junior Courtney Johnson’s (Alexandria, Va./Edison) free kick strike in the 95th minute lifted LHU in the big win.

The Haven jumped on its hosts early in the match, netting the first goal just 5:49 in.

Freshman Carly D’Orsaneo (Elverson, Pa./Living Word) put LHU up 1-0 after he buried a loose ball off a corner kick.

The Lakers would battle back and draw even in the 60th minute of play as Sarah Powell found the back of net.

Regulation would end with both squads deadlocked at 1-1, but less than five minutes into the first overtime frame Johnson put the game away for the Lady Eagles.

Lock Haven rookie goalkeeper Haley Zinn (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) made seven saves in the win.

LHU head coach Heather Davis couldn’t have been happier with her team’s performance and called it a “tremendous win and a total team effort.”

Davis was particular pleased with Zinn and the play of her backline, saying the defense really stepped up and led the effort. She also noted the play of junior Kellie Wieger (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata), saying she provided a “great spark off the bench late.”

The Lady Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. when they travel to California (Pa.) University for PSAC West action.
