Bald Eagles return home for gridiron clash with Clarion
 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team (0-7, 0-4 PSAC West) returns home to Lock Haven to play host to Clarion University (1-6, 0-4 PSAC West) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division clash.

The Game:

Kickoff Saturday (Oct. 18) is set for 7 p.m. at the Hubert Jack Stadium on the campus of Lock Haven University. The Bald Eagles return home still looking for the first win of the season. LHU enters the game 0-7 overall and 0-4 in PSAC West action. Clarion is 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the division. The PSAC West clash is a rematch of the two teams season finale a year ago, where Lock Haven avoided a winless season by topping the Golden Eagles 17-14 in overtime. In their seven games this season LHU has played four nationally ranked opponents. Most recently LHU fell to No. 8 California (Pa.) 56-3. Clarion is coming off a 49-14 loss to Slippery Rock. The Golden Eagles win came back in a week two when they downed Kutztown 26-20. They’ve lost five straight since their only win of the year.



The Series:

Clarion leads the all-time series 39-16-1. Lock Haven won last year’s season finale 17-14 in overtime. LHU took home the first ever meeting 12-0 back in 1928.

LHU notes:

The loss at No. 8 Cal marked the fourth time in seven games that LHU matched up against a nationally ranked opponent … Cal was the highest ranked team LHU has played … Prior to the Cal game three of The Haven’s first six opponents were ranked in the top-25 … LHU opened the season against Glenville State, who features one of top running backs in Division II in the form of Jerry Seymour, the nations leading rusher.

Four different Bald Eagles have an interception this year.

Defensively LHU is being paced by Dean Tortorice, who has a team-high 41 tackles … Wes Plummer has 38 stops … Shane Barie and Shawn Crebs have 34 tackles.

Ibrahim Smith leads Lock Haven in rushing with 26.7 yards per game … Cameron Turner leads the Bald Eagles in receiving with 18.3 yards per game.

Punter Brendon Pickle is ranked 32nd out of 100 in putting at the D-II level … He is averaging 39.65 yards per punt.

Ibrahim Smith has three of Lock Haven’s four TDs this season.

The game at No. 12 IUP was tied 7-7 at halftime, but IUP’s potent offense came alive in the third quarter, scoring 28 points (four TD’s in the third) … Freshman quarterback Jarryd Burkett was 8-for-16 passing and threw one interception … He passed for 33 yards on the day … Ibrahim Smith scored LHU’s TD … Smith led The Haven with 16 rushes for 28 yards.

Defensively LHU was led by Dean Tortorice, who had a team-high six tackles against IUP ... He made five solo stops and recorded one tackles for a loss … Andre Morrison had five tackles while Aaron Pryer and Shawn Crebs both made four.

LHU was shutout for the second time in ’08 when Shippenburg beat them 36-0 at Hubert Jack Stadium

In a rain-soaked loss at WCU, LHU posted its first touchdown of the year … Sophomore Ibrahim Smith scored on a six-yard run … Setting up the TD was a 48 yard interception return by DeMarr Dowell that put LHU at the West Chester seven-yard line.

Freshman quarterback Jarryd Burkett made the second start of this career at home vs. Shippensburg.

Despite a 30-0 loss in their opener the Bald Eagles defense looked solid … The Haven got off to a solid start as sophomore linebacker Wes Plummer (picked off Pioneer quarterback James McCants on the just the second play of Glenville’s opening drive. Plummer had a solid outing on defense for Lock Haven. Along with his interception he made five tackles … Shane Barie and Dustin Harsch each recorded a team-high six tackles. Five other Bald Eagles had four tackles on the night.

Bald Eagles fall to #8 Cal 56-3

CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2008) – The Lock Haven University football team (0-7, 0-4 PSAC West) fell to No. 8 California (Pa.) University (6-1, 4-0 PSAC West) today on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.

With the win California, ranked No. 8 nationally improved to 4-0 in PSAC West play while the Bald Eagles fall to 0-4.

Lock Haven’s lone three points came off the foot of kicker Brendon Pickel (Easton, Pa./Easton), who connected on this first field goal attempt of the year. Pickel’s kick from 23 yards was good with just 40 seconds to play in the opening half, cutting the Cal lead to 19-3.

With no time left in the opening half however California tacked on a field goal to take a 22-3 lead into the locker room.

Rookie quarterback Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) was 15-for-31 passing for 109 yards and he threw one pick.

Colden Carroll (Philadelphia/Calhoun County) led The Haven in rushing on the day as he ran for 38 yards on seven carries. Reggie Mencer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) added 30 yards on the ground.

DeMarr Dowell (Buffalo, N.Y./Erie C.C.) made four catches for 41 yards and Cameron Turner (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) had 32 yards on four grabs.

Defensively LHU was led by senior Shawn Crebs (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), who recorded a game-high eight tackles. He made five solo stops on the afternoon.

Shane Barie (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) made six stops (3 solo & 3 assisted).

SR Runs Past Clarion 49-14

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2008) –

Slippery Rock running backs Ryan Lehmeier, Corey Manful and Sayquan Scott-Mitchell rushed for over 100 yards and 2 td's each, leading "The Rock" to a 49-14 win over Clarion on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.

A PSAC-Western Division game, Slippery Rock moves its record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC-West. Clarion dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the West.

Manful and Lehmeier both rushed for 129 yards and 2 td's as they alternated playing time in the first three quarters. In a reserve role, Scott-Mitchell came in and ran for 179 yards and 2 td's.

Slippery Rock's Corey Manful put the first points on the board with a 1 yard td run at 4:30 of the first quarter, giving SR a 7-0 lead. That drive went 99-yards in 14 plays and took 7:08 off the clock.

Early in the second quarter Clarion drove from its own 4 yard line to the Slippery Rock 19. Clarion qb Tyler Huether hit some big passes in the drive including a 24-yarder to Jaques Robinson, a 14-yarder to Matt Foradora, one for 12 again to Robinson and an 18-yarder to Alfonso Hoggard, which had Clarion at the SR 21. On third and 8 at the 19, Huether's pass was intercepted by Zach Sheridan at the Rock 5, ending a threat that could have tied the game.

Later in the second quarter, SR running back Ryan Lehmeier put the Rock ahead 14-0 with 1:55 left before intermission on a 13-yard td run.

SR put the game away early in the third quarter scoring twice in 2:10. Manful scored on a 13-yard td run on the opening drive of the second half giving SR a 21-0 lead at 13:47.

Clarion fumbled the kickoff and SR recovered at the Clarion 27. Six plays later SR qb Brandon Frohnapple tossed a 3-yard td pass to Terry Grossetti at 11:37 of the third at SR led 28-0

Clarion scored on a 14-yard td pass from Tyler Huether to Jaques Robinson at 9:48 of the fourth quarter to make it 35-7. The score came only two plays after Barrington Morrison recovered a Scott-Mitchell fumble at the SR 31. Huther hit Nate Pagan for 17 yards to the 14, before throwing a fade route in the right corner of the endzone for the Clarion td.

The Golden Eagles scored again on the Huether to Robinson connection, this time a 3-yarder, and Clarion pulled to 42-14 with 2:19 left in the game.

Clarion had 329 yards of offense including 100 yards rushing and 229 yards passing.

Clarion qb Tyler Huether hit on 26 of 45 passes for 224 yards and 2 td's with 3 interceptions. He also rushed for 93 yards.

Jaques Robinson caught 8 passes for 78 yards and 2 td's, while Alfonso Hoggard grabbed 6 balls for 51 yards.

Slippery Rock had 503 yards of offense including 451 rushing and 52 passing.

Frohnapple connected on 7 of 11 passes for 52 yards and 1 td.
