LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (10-6-3, 3-3-2 PSAC West) fell to No. 22 Slippery Rock University (13-4-1, 4-3 PSAC West) 3-1 today at home in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action as both teams were battling for a spot in the PSAC playoffs.
The Bald Eagles looked poised to protect their home turf and earn a spot in the post-season as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.
Just 16:03 into the match freshman Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) scored after splitting the SRU defense and tucking the ball past Slippery Rock goalie Greg Blum.
Martin Pletz (Pittsburgh/ Carlynton) played a perfect ball into Shertzer that enabled him to split through the defense and draw Blum off his line. Shertzer cleanly beat Blum, tucking the ball side netting and putting LHU up 1-0 in just the 17th minute.
Just over three minutes later however, The Rock drew even on a Jeremy Deighton goal.
The first half ended with both teams deadlocked at 1-1.
Slippery Rock was able to put two goals away in the second 45 minutes of play, helping it earn the win that puts SRU atop the PSAC West standings.
LHU goalie Billy Trimble (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) made six saves in the loss.
Lock Haven closes out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1 at home when they play host to Lake Erie College at 1 p.m.
