LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For members of the Lock Haven University field hockey team have been named Northeast Conference (NEC) First Team selections.
The awards were handed out tonight (Thursday, Nov. 6) at the 2008 NEC Field Hockey Championship pre-tournament banquet held in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center, on the campus of LHU.
Lock Haven is host for this year’s championship, which kicks off tomorrow morning on Charlotte E. Smith Field
Leading way for the Lady Eagles was senior Blair Wynne (Trinidad and Tobago/Sangre Grande), who was named NEC Player of the Year for the third time in her remarkable career.
Junior back Alanna Lewis (Trinidad and Tobago/Southeast Port of Spain) picked up NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second straight season.
Also making the first team was junior Suzann Hobart (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) and sophomore Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights).
LHU head coach Pat Rudy was also honored by her peers, as she was named NEC Coach of the Year.
Wynne, a midfielder was The Haven’s play maker all year long, leading LHU to a 17-3 overall record. It was Wynne’s play making ability that also led Lock Haven to their second consecutive undefeated NEC regular season.
Wynne scored 17 goals during the regular season, which was second best on the team. She also added six assists for 40 points, second best on the squad. Wynne tallied five game-winning goals and recorded one hat trick this season. She scored in 13 of the 18 matches she played in.
Wynne also recorded two or more points in an impressive 13 matches, including six in the 3-2 win over Cornell.
Hordendorf helped pace Lock Haven’s explosive attack up front. LHU’s dominate offense outscored opponents 62-24, thanks in large part to Hordendort, who scored a conference-best 19 goals.
Hordendorf’s 19 goals were a team-high, as she recorded a goal in 12 different matches. She also dished out six assists for a team-high 44 points, also the top mark in the NEC this season. She averaged 2.20 points per game during the regular a season and tallied a team-high eight game-winning goals.
Hobart picks up her second straight NEC First Team nod, as she was a key component for The Haven’s sensational offense. Hobart recorded a team and conference-best 14 assists. She also had 10 goals for 34 points, which was third best on the Lady Eagles squad.
Hobart picked up at least one assist in 11 different matches and recorded a season-high nine points in a 5-1 win over Sacred Heart. In that match, she played a key role in all five goals, scoring four and assisting on the fifth.
Lewis was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season after leading LHU’s stingy defense that allowed only 24 goals all year long.. She chipped in on offense as well with one goal and 11 assists, as she played a key role on penalty corners.
Lewis’s strong defensive play help hold opponents to just 94 shots on goal all season. She also led a defense that held its opponents to a 1.53 goals-against-average.
The Lady Eagles dominating defense only allowed three goals during conference play thanks in large part to the efforts of Lewis.
Rudy led The Haven to a 17-3 overall record. LHU capped off its second straight 7-0 run in conference play and enters tomorrow’s NEC tournament looking for its third consecutive NEC tournament title.
2008 marked Lock Haven’s fifth straight NEC regular season title as Rudy has led LHU to the championship every year since returning to Division I play and joining the conference in 2004 (2008, 2007, 2006, 2005 & 2004).
Heading into the post-season Lock Haven has won 22 straight matches against NEC opponents. Lock Haven’s three losses this season have all come to teams currently ranked in the top-20, including No. 1 Maryland.
The Lady Eagles are in action tomorrow when the kick off their quest for their straight NEC tournament title. LHU is action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. when The Haven takes on Quinnipiac University on Charlotte Smith Field.
