Lady Eagles fly to three-peat, shutout Rider 3-0 in NEC Championship game

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (19-3) capped off the three-peat this afternoon at home on Charlotte Smith Field as the Lady Eagles shutout Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Rider University (13-7) 3-0 in the NEC Championship match.

With the win Lock Haven makes it three NEC tournament championships in a row and will advance to the NCAA play-in game.

The win also extends The Haven’s win streak to nine matches. Lock Haven has also won 24 straight matches over NEC opponents with that impressive streak dating back to the 2006 season.

Just as she did in yesterday’s 4-1 semifinal victory over Quinnipiac, Casey Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) opened the scoring in Saturday’s title bout. She ripped a shot past Rider goalie Lyndsie Johnson on penalty corner, one of the Haven’s nine on the day, in the 11th minute.

Sophomore back Alanna Lewis (Trinidad & Tobago/Southeast Port-of-Spain) and junior back Emma Wessner (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) earned assists on the play as the two helped to put LHU in control, leading 1-0 just over 10 minutes into the match.

Sophomore Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) added her league-leading 21st goal of the season 14 minutes later to double the Lady Eagles’ lead at 2-0 heading into the break. The ball was driven in toward goal off a penalty corner shot by Blair Wynne (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago/Sangre Grande), with Lewis hanging on the far post. Lewis was able to slot the ball across to an open Amy Hordendorf, who tucked the ball into an open cage.

Wynne scored her third goal of the tournament in the 56th minute after a tremendous individual effort. The three-time NEC Player of the Year, chipped one into the upper left corner of the cage.

Wynne’s third goal of the tournament solidified her selection as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Wynne, Amy Hordendorf, Lewis and Tonia Marie James (D’Abadie, Trinidad and Tobago/Saint Augustine) were all named to the All-Tournament team.

Lock Haven’s defensive effort was sensational today, as it allowed just five shots on goal. Leading the way was Lewis, Wessner and Amanda Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights).

Sophomore goalie Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) was only forced to make two saves, but she was up to the task helping to preserve the shutout.

The Lady Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. when they travel to American University, the winner of the Patriot League for the NCAA Division I play-in game. The winner of Tuesday’s play-in game will advance to the NCAA Tournament, which kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 15.
