Lady Eagles fall to #18 American in NCAA play-in match

WASHINGTON – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (19-4) lost to No. 18 American University (13-7) 2-0 today in the NCAA Division I play-in game.

With the win American advances to the NCAA Tournament, which kicks off Saturday, Nov. 15.

Despite outshooting their hosts 10-8 in the first half, the Lady Eagles and AU were deadlocked at 0-0 heading into halftime.

American tallied two second half goals to take home the win. Irene Schickhardt scored both goals for AU.

Sophomore goalie Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made five saves in the loss, stretching her season save number to 83.

Senior Blair Wynne (Arima, Trinidad & Tobago/Sangre Grande), 2008 Northeast Conference (NEC) Player of the Year and NEC Tournament MVP did everything she could to spark the offense with a team-high six shots, four of which were on target.

American stuck early in the second to break open the tie as Schickhardt scored the first of her two tallies in the 39th minute. Less than four minute later it was 2-0, thanks to Schickardt.

The Lady Eagles finish the 2008 season 19-4 overall, with all four losses coming to teams ranked within the top-20. LHU recently capped off the three-peat as Lock Haven won its third straight NEC tournament title. The Haven has also won five straight NEC regular season titles dating back to 2004, when LHU returned to Division I play and joined the NEC.

Lock Haven had four players named to the All-NEC First Team, led by Wynne the 2008 Player of the Year and junior back Alanna Lewis (Trinidad & Tobago/Southeast Port-of-Spain), the 2008 NEC Defensive Player of the Year. LHU head coach Pat Rudy was also named NEC Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Eagles to their second consecutive 7-0 season in NEC play.
