LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – It was a special night in Thomas Fieldhouse for the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (2-4).
Lock Haven used some late game heroics to edge West Chester University (4-2) 70-68 in a thriller and senior forward Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) broke the school’s all-time scoring record.
Arre, already one of the most decorated players in the history of the program needed just 15 points coming into tonight to take over as Lock Haven’s all-time scoring leader.
With 1:15 to go in the first half, Arre took a pass from Jarrell Spence (Philadelphia/Scotland School) in the corner and his three-pointer was dead on the money, as he broke Michael Shue’s (1993-97) record of 1,716 points.
Arre finished with a game-high 23 points giving him 1,725 for his career, as he now stands alone atop the all-time list.
Just as important as the record, Arre’s three-pointer with just over a minute to play in the first gave LHU a 14-point lead at the break with the Bald Eagles leading 35-21.
LHU was on fire in the first half, shooting 48 percent from the field and the Bald Eagles used an 11-point run late to help secure the big halftime lead.
Along with Arre’s 15 first half points, freshman Eric Brennan (Chester, Pa./West Catholic) netted 10 of his 16 points in opening half.
However, with just over 5:00 in regulation, West Chester had cut the LHU lead to just two points. Clutch free-throw shooting kept LHU alive late and ultimately set the Bald Eagles up for the win.
With just two seconds left in a tied game, Warren Christian (Baltimore/Catonsville C.C.) accepted a pass from Brennan and was able to convert on a wide-open lay-up underneath, giving the Bald Eagles the win on their home court much to the delight of the frenzied home crowd.
Christian was solid with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. He also had three assists and three blocks.
Spence finished with 14 points on the night which included four three-pointers.
The Bald Eagles return to action on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. when they play host to Shippensburg University.
