Bald Eagle grapplers wrap up competition at Southern Scuffle
 

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team wrapped up competition today at the 2008 Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Cornell won the team championship, besting the 29-team field with 139 points. Edinboro University was second (134 points) and Kent State rounded out the top-three teams.

The Bald Eagles placed 23rd.

A pair of seniors led the way for LHU as Ben Hepburn (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and Tom Kocher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) both turned in solid outings.

Hepburn, wrestling at 197 pounds opened his tournament with three straight wins and capped off a strong showing with an eighth-place finish.

Hepburn rattled off three straight wins yesterday to kick off his final Southern Scuffle. He was dominate early, winning 11-2, 5-2 and 4-3, before falling to Cayle Byers of George Mason 3-2.

Hepburn bounced back with a solid 6-3 win, but dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of North Carolina’s Dennis Drury, who placed third.

Hepburn capped off his tournament by dropping the seventh-place match. He lost 3-1 in sudden victory to Dan Tulley of Duke.

Kocher went 3-2 at the Scuffle, competing at 184.

Kocher opened his tournament with a dominating victory, as he cruised past Duke’s John Barone 20-3.

Kocher lost his next match, but followed that up with two wins.

LHU is back in action when The Haven kicks off 2009 at local-rival Penn State. The Bald Eagles will travel the short distance to PSU on Sunday, Jan. 4 to battle the No. 16 Nittany Lions at 3 p.m. in Rec Hall.
