Women’s Soccer Gets Offensive in Season Opener, Lady Eagles Win 5-1

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W Va. – Lock Haven University head women’s soccer coach Heather Davis has stressed that this year’s Lady Eagles squad would play a much more attacking style of soccer looking to score more goals and that’s exactly what they did in their season opener cruising past Shepherd University 5-1 on the road.

LHU’s five goals came from three different players.

Senior forward Colleen Kafka (Candor, N.Y./Candor), the teams leading scorer from a year ago netted a pair of goals.

Both of Kafka’s goals came off assists from Lynnette Reitz (Montoursville, Pa./Mountoursville).

Sophomore Melinda Dodson (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) also found the back of the net twice to help pace the Haven’s offensive attack.

Rookie Brittany Cranmer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) made her debut in crimson and white a memorable one notching the first goal of her career.

Lock Haven netted their first goal less than three minutes into the contest as Kafka scored the first of her two goals. Just over ten minutes later Kafka made it 2-0.

Shepherd would cut the Haven’s lead to just one as they scored in the 19th minute of play, but LHU took the 2-1 lead into the break.

Just over seven minutes into the second half of play Dodson scored off an assist by freshman Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) who tallied her first career point in a LHU jersey, while helping to put the Haven up by two goals again, at 3-1.

From there the Lady Eagles would cruise to victory scoring two more goals.

Cranmer scored her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Heidi Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) in the 28th minute and Dodson capped off the scoring with her second goal off an assist from Bekah Stonecypher (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop).

The Lady Eagles (1-0) return to action on Saturday, Aug. 25 in their home opener as they take on Kutztown University at 2 p.m.
