CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (4-19, 2-8 PSAC West) used some strong play down the stretch to down host California (Pa.) University (11-11, 4-6 PSAC West) 64-62 in today’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division clash.
With just nine seconds left in regulation and the game knotted at 62-62, Kelvin McLean (Newport, Va./Heritage) hit a jumper to put the Bald Eagles up two, 64-62.
The Haven would survive a Cal three-point attempt at the buzzer to earn the big road win.
McLean led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. The senior also dished out a trio of assists.
Junior Warren Christian (Baltimore/Catonsville C.C.) had a solid outing for LHU with 19 points, a team-high eight rebounds and two assists.
Senior Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) reached another milestone in his already remarkable career. He netted 18 points tonight, which gives him 2,014 for his career. That number is the all time Bald Eagles scoring record.
Arre needed only four points coming into today to reach 2,000. He is just the second player in LHU history to surpass the 2,000-point plateau. Tina Martin (1983-86) netted 2,157 points in her sensational Lady Eagle career.
Arre’s mark of 2,014 is eighth best on the all-time PSAC scoring list.
LHU trailed 32-30 at halftime, but took the lead early in the second half of play.
With 1:47 left in the game, the Vulcans tied the game at 62-62, but McLean’s last second heroics proved to be the difference.
California was led by two players in double figures.
Lock Haven shot 48 percent from the field for the game.
The Bald Eagles are back on the road again Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Slipper Rock University. The Haven will battle The Rock at 8 p.m. in a PSAC West clash.
