LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track & field teams took up competition at several different venues this weekend and the common trend of The Haven recording spectacular performances continued.
The Bald and Lady Eagles competed at the Boston University Valentine Invitational and the Robert J. Kane Invitational, hosted by Cornell University.
Once again, Lock Haven continued to impress as school records fell and more Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks were hit.
Several all-time top-five performance were also set, as well as several NCAA Division II National Qualifying marks.
LHU co-head coach Aaron Russell called it one of the best all-around weekends ever as the men’s and women’s teams continue to impress up and down the lineup.
Leading the way at Cornell was Chelsea Morse (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Campbell-Savona), who picked up a first and fifth place finish. Morse won the high jump with a mark of 5-7, matching her season-best mark. She was fifth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 17-02.75.
The Lady Eagles sprinters were solid at Boston and several PSAC marks were hit. Leading the way for LHU was Cassie Snider (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) and Meagan Wolf (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). Snider hit a PSAC qualifying marking in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.67 and Wolf finished 19th overall in the 400 meter dash with an impressive time of 58.94. That time also qualifies her for the PSAC championship meet.
Mid-distance specialists Shala Simms (Ardmore, Pa./Upper Darby) and Alyssa Douma (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) turned in very solid performances in the 800 meter run.
Simms again broke her own school record after an 11th-place finish. Her time of 2:14.05 establishes a school record and is also a NCAA mark.
Douma ran 2:18.59, which ranks as the third fastest time in LHU history and qualifies her for the PSAC championships.
Freshman Lindsey Lambert (Howell, N.J./Howell) hit a PSAC time in the mile after a solid performance of 5:13.43.
Alexis Patrick (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) ran the fourth fastest time in school history in the 3K. Her impressive time of 10:53.19 also qualifies her for the PSAC championship meet.
The Lady Eagles were also represented well in the 5K as Melinda Liptak (Boyertown, Pa./Marywood Univ.) led the way. She ran 18:49.95 to qualify for PSAC’s and her time is also fourth-best in school history.
Janelle Gobel (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was also strong at 5K with a PSAC mark of 18:57.11.
Lock Haven was also once again strong in the women’s throwing events with a host of solid performances.
Redshirt-freshman Vanita Moses (Neshaminy, Pa./Langhorne) was LHU’s top performer in the shot put with a 10th-place finish (48-10.25).
JaKia Gumby (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) was 13th in the shot put with a heave of 39-05.75.
The Lady Eagles distance medley relay finished fifth overall with a time of 12:00.03.
The Bald Eagles were also very impressive over the weekend as they turned in one tremendous performance after another.
The Haven men’s spring corps continued to impress.
Greg Mock (Sicklerville, N.J./Timbercreek) and Preston Faulkner (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) were again strong in the 55 meter dash.
Mock placed fifth overall among a very deep field with a time of 6.49 His prelim time of 6.45 was the third fasted time in LHU history.
Faulkner hit another solid time of 6.76.
LHU was also solid at 200 meters. Chris Jones (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) and Steve Roberts (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) took over the No. 1 & 2 spots in the conference rankings after a solid outing.
Jones was eighth overall with a school-record time of 21.95 while Roberts ran an impressive 22.24.
Chris Edelman (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), who’s been on a tear, continued to impress with another sizzling performance in the 400 meter dash. Edelman broke the school record with a time of 48.24, which is one of the top times in D-II this year. He was fifth overall at Boston and the top collegiate finisher in the event.
LHU had three others go under 50.00 in the 400 including, Kevin Moore (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley), 49.30, Steve Roberts (49.62) and Ben McConnell (Danville, Pa./Danville), 49.94, all of whom hit PSAC marks in the event.
Lock Haven got four conference qualifying marks in the 800 as Nick Hilton (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township), Justin Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake-Lehman), Brandon Pomerantz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Josh Gainer (State College, Pa./Akron Univ.) all went under 2:00.
Hilton led the way with a time of 1:56.43. His best performance of the day however came in the mile as he took over the top spot in the conference by four seconds with a sensational time of 4:12.49. Hilton finished 19th in a deep field.
Pomerantz also had a solid 800-mile double on the day. He ran an impressive mile time of 4:17.47.
Nathan Zondlo (Pittston Area) ran 8:35.80 in the 3K, which ranks among the top times in the conference.
Tim Getz (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and AJ Johnson (Coventry, R.I./Coventry), were solid at 5K for the Bald Eagles.
Getz was 13th with a time of 14:51.21, which just missed a national qualifying mark and Johnson ran 14:57.27.
Jed Yeatts (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) was also impressive in the 5K as he ran 15:18, marking a 20-second personal-best.
Randy Sylvia (Johnstown, Pa./Pine Richland) was fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 58-01.75, which just missed his own school record.
The Bald Eagles 4x400 meter relay team closed out the day with a monumental performance. The Haven foursome ran 3:14.50, which is a school record by three seconds and currently sits among the top-five times run this year in D-II.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Denault Invitational hosted by Cornell.
