Former Lady Eagle Swimmer Captures Gold in Latvia

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Gerda Smirnova (Riga, Latvia/Ilguciema Usk.) a recent graduate of Lock Haven University and former member of the Lady Eagles swim team is still enjoying success in the pool.

Smirnova recently competed in the Championships of Latvia and won the 50 meter freestyle race.

Along with taking first place in the 50 free, she was also a member of the winning 4x100 meter freestyle relay team and placed second in the 100 freestyle.

Smirnova is a 2007 graduate of Lock Haven and was instrumental in the success of the LHU program for the past few seasons. This past season the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) swimmer came within .05 second of making the NCAA national championships in the 50 freestyle.

“It’s nice to see a swimmer who has recently completed her eligibility here at LHU continue to compete and compete well at her home country’s national championships,” LHU head swimming coach Andy Waeger said.
