#8 Lady Eagles upend #6 Gannon in PSAC West thriller

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 8 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (9-2, 4-1 PSAC West) got a huge win tonight on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action, as the Lady Eagles downed No. 6 Gannon University (8-3, 2-2 PSAC West) 9-8 in a thrilling battle of two of the nation’s top teams.

There was plenty on the line tonight in Erie and it showed, as the two teams battled all the way to end, but it was Lock Haven edging the Lady Knights, snapping Gannon’s six-game win streak.

With the win LHU also snapped Gannon’s nine-game home win streak, which included an upset of West Chester, who was ranked number-one at the time on Sunday.

A huge key for LHU head coach Kristen Selvage and her squad was a six-goal run that began late in the first half and continued early in the second.

That six-goal streak changed the momentum of the game and put the Lady Eagles in control.

Gannon took an early lead, going up 1-0 with 23:30 to go in the first half, but LHU was quick to respond, as Allison Berger (Oreland, Pa./Springfield) scored less than a minute later.

GU was quick to bounce right back and jumped out to a 3-2 lead, which eventually became a 6-3 advantage in favor of host-Gannon.

With 46 seconds left in the opening half and Gannon still leading 6-3, Kayleigh Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored to make it 6-4.

LHU wasn’t done in the opening half and Amber Hoch (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) scored with just nine seconds left, cutting the lead to 6-5, heading into the break.

With the momentum finally in their favor, the Lady Eagles jumped all over Gannon early in the second, tying the game at 6-6 less than a minute in, off a goal by Leigh Titus (Towaco, N.J./Montville).

Lock Haven scored the next three goals to take a 9-6 lead.

With 7:05 left in regulation, GU had made it 9-8, but The Haven defense tightened and LHU secured the all-important road win.

Hoch and Titus led the way offensively for LHU in the win.

Hoch had a game-high four goals and Titus finished with three goals and two assists.

The Lady Eagles got a tremendous effort from freshman goalie Heather Sacko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), who made five saves.

Katie Zichelli (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) proved to be a huge difference maker on the defensive side of the ball, turning in all-around solid effort for The Haven.

Lock Haven is back in action on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. when the Lady Eagles host Seton Hill in non-conference action.
