LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Senior forward Colleen Kafka (Candor, N.Y./Candor) scored two goals today including the game-winner in the sixth minute of overtime to lift the Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (2-3, 1-1 PSAC West) over No. 15 Indiana University (Pa.) (2-2, 0-2 PSAC).
The Lady Eagles looked strong defensively early as IUP came out strong recording 10 shots in the first half.
Senior Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) was huge in the net for LHU all day including the first half where she was called upon to make several very good saves. She finished with nine for the game, six of which came in the second half.
“She’s (Wagner) a rock for us and never fails to make the big saves,” LHU head coach Heather Davis said. “She’s always there to make that clutch save for us.”
Possession went back and forth to end the first half with neither team capitalizing on their chances as they headed to the break 0-0.
IUP took the lead off a Melissa Kornock goal in the 64th minute of play.
Kafka’s first strike of the game, a 36-yard blast to the far post tied the game
at 1-1 with less than eight minutes to play.
Lock Haven took control of the game early in overtime, quickly going to work creating a several solid scoring opportunities.
Just over five minutes into overtime Bekah Stonecypher (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) laid a ball off to Kafka who ripped it near-post off the goalies hands from 20 yards out to lift the Lady Eagles to victory.
“It was a thrilling victory for us,” Davis said. “We always knew it was there and we finally put all the pieces together today.”
Davis was also very pleased with Kafka’s performance as she had very high expectations for the teams returning goal leader and Kafka certainly hasn’t disappointed. She has a team-high five goals (10 points).
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. when they host California (Pa.) University in PSAC West action.
