#5 LHU sweeps Mansfield, improves to 9-1 in PSAC Central Division action

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 5 Lock Haven University softball team (32-5, 9-1 PSAC Central) swept Mansfield University (11-15, 3-7 PSAC Central) in a key Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division matchup this afternoon at Lawrence Field.

LHU took game one, 6-2 and won game two, 12-1 in five innings.

Lock Haven got all they could handle from Mansfield early in game one, as the Lady Eagles trailed Mansfield 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

However, a five-run onslaught ensued to secure the victory.

Amanda Gutmaker (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Northeast) and Brittany Muthard (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) led the comeback with back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gutmaker’s home run was a two-run shot to right-center field.

Gutmaker finished with two hits and two RBIs.

Seniors Ilia Lopez (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and Sarah Norris (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) also had a solid day at the plate in game one. Lopez went 2-for-2 with a double and Norris added two hits for The Haven.

Kristen Erb (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) added yet another complete game victory to her already strong season in the pitching circle. Erb gave up only two runs on four hits and struck out 10. She walked no Mansfield batters in game one.

The comeback in game one was the opening act to set the stage for the offensive dominance Lock Haven would show from the start in game two.

Seven Lady Eagles had hits in the game, with three Haven batters putting the ball in play multiple times.

Amanda Roosa (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), Lock Haven’s all-time hits leader led LHU at the plate in game two. She went a perfect three-for-three with a game-high five RBIs, which included a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.

In addition to Roosa, three other Lady Eagles went yard in the win.

Muthard drove in two runs with her deep shot over the leftfield fence. Nancy O’Connor (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) followed Muthard’s lead with a solo shot of her own to make it back-to-back jacks in consecutive games.

Norris had one of her two hits clear the outfield wall. She finished the game with two RBIs. Lopez and Erb also drove in one run each.

Erb picked up win number-31 on the season in a four-hit, two-strikeout effort. Erb worked three innings before giving way to Julia Popovich (Lemont, Pa./State College), who had a strong outing in relief. She struck out two, walked two and did not surrender a hit in two innings of work.

LHU returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Indiana (Pa.) University for a PSAC Central doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
