LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Junior Leigh Titus (Towaco, N.J./Montville) scored with 19 seconds left in the game to tie it at 16-16 and the No. 4 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (14-3, 7-1 PSAC West) scored three goals in overtime to down No. 7 Gannon University (12-4, 5-3 PSAC West) tonight, helping the Lady Eagles clinch the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division regular season title.
Along with the PSAC West regular season title, LHU also earns the No. 1 seed heading into the PSAC Championship tournament, which will hosted by The Haven starting on Friday.
Coming into tonight’s much anticipated regular season finale, LHU and Gannon were ranked among the nation’s best and it showed on Charlotte E. Smith Field, as the two D-II powers needed extra time to solve their grudge match.
Lock Haven trailed 16-15 after GU scored the go-ahead goal with just 2:30 left in the contest.
Titus however scored her third goal of the game with just 19 second left in the second, sending things into overtime.
The Lady Eagles dominated overtime scoring three goals.
Just 58 seconds in OT, senior Amber Hoch (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) scored the eventual game-winner, as he put LHU up 17-16.
Only 1:23 later, Allison Berger (Oreland, Pa./Springfield) to put Lock Haven in the driver’s seat, as LHU lead 18-16.
With just five seconds left in overtime, Berger put it away with her team-high sixth goal of the game.
Hoch’s game-winner was a special one as it came on her “Senior Night” as she marks the Lady Eagles only senior on this year’s squad.
Hoch finished with four goals.
Kayleigh Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) continued her streak of sensational outings with a five-point night. The freshman scored two goals and dished out a team-high three assists.
Lock Haven jumped out to a 1-0 lead early, as Berger notched her first tally just 21 seconds in.
The two teams exchanged leads to end the first half, but Gannon led 8-7.
The second half, much like the first proved to be a very even back-and-forth battle, which set things up for the thrilling finish.
Lock Haven wraps up the regular season with an impressive 14-3 record and went 7-1 in PSAC West play to help them capture the regular season division crown.
LHU returns to action on Friday, April 24 when Lock Haven hosts the 2009 PSAC tournament. Semifinal action will be played Friday and the championship game will be Saturday on Charlotte Smith Field. Game times and matchups TBA.
