LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The No. 3 Lock Haven University softball team (39-5) put together a solid effort this afternoon, as it opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship First Round action with a 7-0 win over Shippensburg University.
With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 39-5 overall.
Shippensburg advanced to take on host-Lock Haven with a 3-2 win over Slippery Rock in the day’s opening game earlier this morning.
In LHU’s 7-0 win over Shippensburg, The Haven tacked on its seven runs off 12 hits, as the offense came alive behind another solid pitching effort from senior-ace Kristin Erb (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township).
Three different Lady Eagles hit home runs in the big win.
Erb went the distance and struck out 13, as she threw a perfect-game through 4.1 innings of action. She allowed only one walk and gave up two hits in the shutout-win.
Julia Popovich (Lemont, Pa./State College) led the way at the plate with a 3-for-3 day.
Sarah Norris (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) went 3-for-5 with a RBI.
Ilia Lopez (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg), Amanda Gutmaker (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Northeast) and Brittany Muthard (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) all homered for LHU.
In the final game of the day Shippensburg bounced back from its loss to LHU and dropped SRU for a second time today.
SU won 11-5, eliminating The Rock from the tournament and with the win Ship moves on.
Shippensburg, with a 2-1 record today improves to 25-17, while Slippery Rock fell to 21-23 overall.
Lock Haven returns to action tomorrow in the PSAC First Round title-game.
LHU will take on Shippensburg at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, April 25 - 3 p.m. if necessary) on Lock Haven’s Lawrence Field.
