LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University lacrosse team (15-3) defeated Bloomsburg University (11-6) 21-11 in game one of the semi-finals of the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
The win was a special one for Lock Haven for several reasons.
Not only did in put them in the PSAC title game with rival West Chester, but it marked the 100th victory for LHU head coach Kristen Selvage at her alma mater.
The strong play of senior Amber Hoch (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) and freshman Kayleigh Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) would helped lead the team to a birth in the PSAC Championship game tomorrow (Saturday, April 25).
Johnson led the way with a monumental performance as the rookie tallied 10 points. She scored five goals and assisted five others.
Hoch would finish the game with a game-high six goals and two assists.
Leigh Titus (Towaco, N.J./Montville) and Elyse Fisher (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) would also do their part in the game, adding three goals each for the Haven. Titus also had three assists.
Allison Berger (Oreland, Pa./Springfield), Kate Smyth (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) and Lauren Bennett (Fredrick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) also added goals for LHU in the semi-final win. Berger had two goals while Smyth and Bennett had a goal each.
Lock Haven would pull away in the second half, as it outshot Bloomsburg 26-9 on its way to the lopsided 10-point victory.
Heather Sacko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) played a strong game in goal for The Haven, helping to anchor the defensive effort. She made nines saves.
Kathleen Zichelli (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) was solid on the defensive side of the ball and put together an all-around effort. She picked up five ground balls and caused four turnovers.
The Lady Eagles return to action tomorrow against West Chester in the PSAC Championship game at Lock Haven University’s Charlotte E. Smith Field.
The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
West Chester, took down Mercyhurst College 10-8 in the day’s second semifinal.
