LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (2-3-1, 1-1-1 PSAC West) earned a 0-0 draw with California (Pa.) University (0-4-1, 0-3-1 PSAC West) at home today in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
The Lady Eagles controlled momentum throughout creating plenty of good scoring opportunities, but were unable to find the back of net as they played a very strong and physical 110 minutes of soccer.
LHU had a fantastic scoring opportunity early in the first half as sophomore Heidi Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) put a back-heeled shot toward goal from two yards out, but it couldn’t sneak in net. Shortly after Colleen Kafka (Candor, N.Y./Candor) made a nice run down the right side of the field and put a good ball across the goal mouth, but the Lady Eagles couldn’t capitalize, as they continued to push the pace of the game and create quality chances.
The Haven continued to attack, out shooting Cal 10-3 in the first 45 minutes of action, but the score remained 0-0.
With 29 minutes to play in the game Kafka found herself atop the ball on a free kick to the right of the goal where slid the ball far post just out of reach for any Haven player to pop it in.
The chances kept coming for LHU as they continued to hammer down on Cal’s defense. The Lady Eagles next good scoring opportunity came when Lindsey Blessing (Fredericksburg, Pa./Northern Lebanon) ripped a shot from 20 yards out, but Cal’s Erin Cook made one of her seven saves as she came up big for the Vulcans as Lock Haven continued to put the ball on net.
With just under nine minutes to play the Lady Eagles had another opportunity to take the lead, but Kafka was stopped from out in front of net after Melinda Dodson (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) fed her with a nice ball from just inside the 18-yard box on the right side.
With the game still knotted at one goal apiece the teams headed to overtime where LHU had an excellent chance to win the game with just over a minute left in the second overtime period.
Freshman Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) broke in toward goal and made a terrific step over move allowing her to cut away from her defender, but her shot was stopped and the game ended 0-0.
Senior Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) was once again solid in net for LHU, making six saves.
Head coach Heather Davis was very pleased with teams over all effort as they put in a solid 110 minutes of soccer fighting all the way down the stretch.
"There were a lot of positives today," Davis said. "We created a lot of chances and the defense was solid."
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. when they host Adelphia University.
