LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (2-4-1) played well enough to win, but fell 1-0 in a very tightly contested non-conference match up with Adelphi University (3-2) today at McCollum Field.
The Lady Eagles put fourth a strong effort through out creating several solid scoring chances, but couldn’t sneak one home.
With just over 30 minutes to play in the first half the Lady Eagles had an excellent chance to score as Colleen Kafka (Candor, N.Y./Candor) started a strong build up out of midfield down the right side of the field. Kafka played a nice ball through to a streaking Kyleigh Roth (Elysburg, Pa./S. Columbia), who crossed the ball across the goal mouth where Heidi Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) had a chance to knock it home, but Adelphi’s goalie was there to make the stop.
LHU had another good oppertunity to score with just over 12 minutes play in the opening half as rookie Arielle Gordon (Epharta, Pa./Epharta) created a good chance for the Haven.
In the second half the Panthers put the pressure on the Lady Eagles, but senior Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick) was up to the task making four saves, three of which came from inside12 yards. She had a total of eight for the game.
One of her best saves came with just over 35 minutes to play in the game as she made a tremendous diving save to her right getting a hand on the ball, which was shot one-on-one from about eight yards out.
Wagner is now 46 saves away from becoming Lock Haven’s all-time leader in career saves.
The visiting Panthers were finally able to beat Wagner in the 82nd minute of action as Caitlin Morrison, Adelphi’s leading goal-scorer found the back of the net.
Even in defeat LHU head coach Heather Davis was pleased with her team’s effort on the field today.
“It’s disappointing to lose because we had opportunities to win, but it was a great effort from the team,” Davis said.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Slippery Rock University for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
