LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (0-0-1) earned a hard-fought draw with Molloy College (0-0-1) 3-3 today at home in wet and soggy conditions at Hubert Jack Stadium.
Today’s match marked first of 2009 for both sides and after 110 minutes things were still deadlocked at 3-3 despite both squads having chances to put it away late in regulation and in each of the two overtime sessions.
Sophomore Kevin Wolfe (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) scored the Bald Eagles first goal of ’09, putting LHU up 1-0 in the seventh minute of play.
Wolfe’s goal came after Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) made a tremendous run down the right side of the field before playing the ball back across the middle into the box. William Pasukinis (Benton, Pa./Benton), who had nearly found the back of net twice in the first five minutes made a fantastic dummy-run onto Shertzer’s pass, leaving it for Wolfe, who easily tucked it home.
Less than 10 minutes later Molloy evened the score.
In the 30th minute Colin Callaghan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) made a strong run into the box and smashed home a header. Shertzer was again the playmaker after another perfect ball into the box.
Less than five minutes before halftime Molloy was awarded a penalty kick and Jose Batista converted to even the score at 2-2. Batista’s second goal of the game in the 60th minute put MC up 3-2.
Lock Haven would not lay down and leveled the score at 3-3 in the 72nd minute.
Lyndell Pompey (South Oropouche, Trinidad & Tobago/Wheeling Jesuit) headed home a free-kick cross from Mark Auman (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield).
Both squads had chances to win the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net in closing moments of the contest.
Chris Custer (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) made six saves including one spectacular effort with less three minutes to go in second overtime.
The Bald Eagles return to action on Wednesday, September 2 at 4 p.m. when they host rival Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
