FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Kristi Shepps (Willow Street, Pa./Penn Manor) scored with less four minutes to go in regulation to help lift the Lock Haven University field hockey team (1-0) past Georgetown (0-2) 4-3 today in the Lady Eagles 2009 season opener at Longwood University.
The Lady Eagles took an early lead after Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) scored in the ninth minute play to put LHU up 1-0. Hordendorf knocked home a rebound from right in front of the cage.
Just before halftime Suzann Hobart (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) made it 2-0 in favor of Lock Haven.
Georgetown’s Kristen Volpe scored three straight goals to open the second half of play, putting Georgetown up 3-2.
In the 56th minute of action Lock Haven leveled the scored on goal by Amanda Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights), who knocked home a rebound.
With less than four minutes to play Shepps ripped a shot that found the back of cage, giving Lock Haven the thrilling victory to open the ’09 campaign.
Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made three saves for Lock Haven on the way to her first win of the season.
The Lady Eagles get right back at tomorrow on the road when they take on Longwood at noon.
