The Game:

The Bald Eagles will travel to Shippensburg on Saturday, September 12 for a 1 p.m. kickoff at the Ship’s Seth Grove Stadium (7,700). LHU (0-1, 0-0 PSAC West) will be looking for their first win of the season after the Week 2 bye. Shippensburg (1-1, 0-0 PSAC East) is coming off an upset of No. 15 (dropped out of rankings this week) Edinboro last Saturday. Ship dropped their 2009 season opener to Shepherd 34-23. Lock Haven opened its ’09 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 26 and the Bald Eagles got shutout by then-ranked No. 20 West Chester 43-0 (WCU is ranked No. 21 in this week’s AFCA National Poll). Saturday’s game marks SU’s 2009 home-opener as LHU sets off on the road for the first time this year.

The Series:

Shippensburg leads the all-time series with LHU 44-18-3 and the Red Raiders have won six straight. The Red Raiders won the first-ever meeting between the two sides in 1929 (26-0). Lock Haven’s last win came in 2002 (26-13) at Hubert Jack Stadium. The Bald Eagles 2002 win over Shippensburg was highlighted by a 99-yard fumble-recovery for a touchdown by Rob Carey.

LHU a glance:

With just one game under their belts this season it’s tough to know what one should expect from the Bald Eagles. There’s certainly no where to go, but for LHU head coach John Klacik and his team after a winless campaign in 2008 (0-11, 0-7 PSAC West).

Lock Haven was shutout 43-0 in its opener as they struggled to get the offense going. LHU used four different quarterbacks, but only managed to rack up 52 total yards.

The Haven’s defensive unit played well enough to win at times and was led by linebacker Luke Ellison, who made six tackles, all of which were solo stops.

Senior Andre Morrison made five stops of the cornerback spot.

Ship at a glance:

Shippensburg enjoyed of their best games in recent memory as the Red Raiders knocked off nationally ranked Ediboro last weekend on the road. Ship’s defense was about as close to perfect as they could get, shutting out the Fighting Scots through three quarters on the way to the 24-24 win.

Lock Haven’s last time out:

Bald Eagles drop season opener to #20 West Chester

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock University football team (0-1) fell to No. 20 West Chester University (1-0) 43-0 tonight at Hubert Jack Stadium in the 2009 season-opener for both teams.

After WCU went up 2-0 on a safety with 10:28 to play in the opening quarter, Lock Haven went toe-to-toe with the Golden Rams for the remainder of the first half, but just couldn’t get the offense moving.

Lock Haven’s defense was solid throughout, particularly in the opening half tonight.

Senior linebacker Luke Ellison was all over the field for The Haven and led the Bald Eagles in tackles with six, all solo stops.

Andre Morrison made five stops and Dean Tortorice chipped in with four.

LHU was down 16-0 at halftime and West Chester tacked on 20 third-quarter points to pave the way for the win.

The Golden Rams racked up a total of 460 offensive yards.

Jarret Kratzer got the start at quarterback, but only completed 4-of-10 passes for 31 yards, as four different players saw time under center for the Bald Eagles.

Back in action:

This weekend’s road-clash with Ship is the first of two away from home for the Bald Eagles. On Saturday, September 19 Lock Haven travels to Clarion, the site of the LHU’s last win (2006 season-finale) for a 6 p.m. kickoff. It will be Lock Haven’s PSAC West opener. The Bald Eagles return to The Haven for a Sept. 26 date with Mercyhurst on homecoming.
