LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (3-9-1, 2-6-1 PSAC West) fell to visiting Mercyhurst College (9-4-1, 7-2-1 PSAC West) 4-1 today at Hubert Jack Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
Mercyhurst scored two goals in each half to earn the important road victory.
Junior-forward Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) scored The Haven’s only tally in the 34th minute.
With the Lady Eagles trailing 1-0, Gordon collected a loose ball from 22 yards out with her back to the goal and made on move to her inside, where she sent a perfect bending shot far post and into the upper corner.
The goal marked Gordon’s team-leading fifth of the season.
It was LHU, who controlled the late stages of the opening half, but in the 41st minute of play Mercyhurst converted on a long free kick to go back on top, 2-1.
MC took the 2-1 lead into halftime and tacked on two goals in the second 45 minutes of play.
Lock Haven got a solid defensive effort from Caitlyn Slattery (Williamsport, Pa./UMBC).
Sophomores Hayley Zinn (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) and Kim Bentley (Springdale, Pa./Springdale) both saw time in goal. Bentley got the start and made two saves before giving way to Zinn, who made a trio of stops.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Saturday, October 17 at 5 p.m. on the road at Gannon University in PSAC West action.
