Bald Eagles set for final home game of 2009 season
 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team is set to host Slippery Rock University in the Bald Eagles final home-game of the 2009 season.

The Bald Eagles (0-8, 0-6 PSAC West) are set to host Slippery Rock University (5-4, 2-4 PSAC West) on Saturday, October 31. Kickoff at Lock Haven’s Hubert Jack Stadium (3,500) is set for noon. The game marks Lock Haven’s final home-game of the 2009 season. LHU is 0-4 at home this season.

LHU is coming off a 27-0 loss on the road at Gannon. The loss dropped Lock Haven to 0-8 overall, marking The Haven’s 19th straight loss.

SRU is coming off a 44-7 loss to No. 23 California (Pa.). The loss marked the third straight for The Rock, who is 5-4 overall and 2-4 in PSAC West play.

The Series:

Lock Haven trails in the all-time series with SRU 12-39-1. The Rock downed LHU 45-7 last season in Slippery Rock and SRU has won 20 straight contests. SRU won the first ever meeting in 1929, 26-0 and LHU’s last win came in 1980, 29-7.

2009 marks the 30th Anniversary 1979 PSAC Championship:

The 2009 season marks the 30th anniversary of Lock Haven’s 1979 PSAC Championship team. Under the direction of head coach Jack Fisher, The Haven went 9-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference play. The ’79-championship was the last time LHU won the conference and it marked the Bald Eagles eighth PSAC title.

The Haven’s linebacker duo – Plummer and Lucas

Both Wes Plummer and Kyle Lucas are coming off huge games on the road Gannon. Lucas was the leader at Gannon and he finished with a game-high 14 tackles. He had five solo stops and one tackle for a loss. Plummer had 10 tackles, including five solo stops and one tackle for a loss. Plummer, a junior is the team’s leading tackler on the year with 49 total tackles. He has 30 solo stops, 4.5 tackles for a loss and one sack.

The Rock’s QB – Redshirt sophomore Rocco Colavecchia was a bright spot for SRU last weekend despite a loss to nationally-ranked California (Pa.) University. He was 13-for-24 passing for 114 yards. He scored The Rock’s only TD on a seven-yard run.

The Haven is coming off a 27-0 loss on the road at Gannon. The loss marked the 19th straight for LHU, which marks the most ever in school history since Lock Haven dropped 18 straight from 1925-27.

After starting the majority of the 2008 season, Jarryd Burkett got his first start of the season under center two weeks ago against IUP.

Last weekend at Gannon, LHU looked to spark the offense with an option package and started sophomore Shawn Faulk at QB. Faulk went 11-for-20 passing with one interception. He racked up 90 total yards through the air.

Jay Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) recorded three catches for 41 yards to lead LHU in receiving.

Lock Haven was shutout 45-0 at home too IUP. IUP entered the game on a four-game losing skid was in the midst of its third longest losing streak since 1982. This will be first time the Crimson Hawks will finish with a losing record in PSAC West play since they went 2-4 in 1981.

In the loss to IUP, LHU only managed one total yard of offense as the Bald Eagles dropped their 18th straight contest dating back to their 0-11 season last year. The 18 losses in a row tie a school record for consecutive losses from 1925-27.

There were several bright spots in the IUP game including a strong defensive effort from rookie defensive back Tyree Pompey, who had a game-high eight tackles. Five of his eight stops were solo efforts and he made one interception.

Wes Plummer had seven stops. Luke Ellison made five tackles, including two for a loss. Five other Bald Eagles had five tackles for The Haven.

Guy Clark showed his athleticism for LHU. The freshman made two tackles and had one interception, while also adding four punts for 88 yards in the second half.

The loss two weekends ago to Cal (48-14) marked the 17th straight for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles are one loss away from tying their school record for consecutive losses (18 – 1925-27)

Two weeks ago, LHU fell on the road at No. 19 Edinboro (ranked No. 12 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Poll).

The loss marked the second of the season to nationally-ranked opponent.

Lock Haven’s lone TD was caught by Devin Sims. Sims 21-yard touchdown reception capped off an eight-play, 62 yard drive.

Clarion was the site of LHU’s last win (2007 season finale) as the Bald Eagles have now lost 16 straight games.

Lock Haven last win at home came on October 28, 2006 against Clarion (W, 14-7).

After using four different quarterbacks in the season-opening loss to WCU, redshirt-freshman Jarret Kratzer saw the majority of time under center in the Ship game. Krazter was 15-for-29 for 111 yards passing.

Junior running back Ibrahim Smith rushed for 37 yards in the loss. Smith had one touchdown, Lock Haven’s first of the 2009 season. Smith’s long run of 11 yards was the TD.

Austin Knighton led Lock Haven’s defensive effort against Shippensburg with a seven-tackle game. Four of his seven stops were solo efforts. Dean Tortorice Shane Barie and Wes Plummer all made six tackles in the game. Tortorice also had one interception, while Plummer made 1.5 tackles for a loss and recorded one sack.

In the 2009 season opener, Lock Haven was shutout 43-0 by nationally-ranked West Chester as the Bald Eagles struggled to get the offense going. LHU used four different quarterbacks, but only managed to rack up 52 total yards.

Slippery Rock at a glance:

After starting the season 3-0, The Rock enters this weekends clash on a three-game losing skid. SRU is 5-4 overall and 2-4 in PSAC West play.

Last weekend, SRU lost to No. 23 Cal (Pa.) 44-7 and Slippery Rock was outgained 416-217.

On the year, redshirt sophomore quarterback Rocco Colavecchia is 97-for-205 passing for 1,256 yards. He’s started all nine games and has eights touchdown passes. He’s averaging 139.6 yards/game through the air.

SayQuan Scott-Mitchell leads SRU in rushing with 77.4 yards/game. He has a total of 697 yards and six TDs.

Defensively, SRU is being led by Zach Sheridan, who has a team-high 57 tackles. He’s made 32 solo stops, 8.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups and one forced fumble. Jayson Ncikson has 55 stops, including 33 solo. The Rock has 19 players, who’ve made 10 ore more tackles on the year.

Football falls on the road at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – (10/24/09) The Lock Haven University football team (0-8, 0-6 PSAC West) was shutout 27-0 on the road today at Gannon University (4-5, 2-4 PSAC West) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.

A 10-point first quarter helped lead the Golden Knights to the win on their homecoming.

Gannon led just 10-0 at halftime, but tacked on two touchdowns in the third quarter, which paved the way for the win.

Sophomore Shawn Faulk (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) got the start under center, as LHU head coach John Klacik looked to the spark The Haven’s offense. Faulk went 11-for-20 passing with one interception. He racked up 90 total yards through the air.

Defensively, the Bald Eagles continue to put up tremendous numbers.

Kyle Lucas (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) was the leader today and he finished with a game-high 14 tackles. He had five solo stops and one tackle for a loss.

Wes Plummer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) had 10 tackles, including five solo stops and one tackle for a loss.

Nick Gounaris (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury) and Dean Tortorice (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional) each finished with seven tackles.

The Bald Eagles did everything they could to get things jump started today, including going for it on fourth-and-one on the third possession of the game, faking a punt in second quarter with a pass-play that resulted in a first down and starting the second half with an onside kick.

Bald Eagles fall to The Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – (11/1/08) The Lock Haven University football team (0-10, 0-7 PSAC West) fell to Slippery Rock University (5-5, 3-4 PSAC West) 45-7 today on the road in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

The Bald Eagles were down 10-0 after the first quarter, but struck early in the second to cut The Rock lead to just 10-7.

LHU trailed 17-7 at the break, but Slippery Rock went on to score 28 second half points, including three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Reggie Mencer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) scored LHU’s touchdown on a 45-yard pass play.

With 11:59 to play in the second quarter, Mencer caught a pass from rookie quarterback Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona).

The 45-yard strike capped off a four-play drive, putting LHU right back in the ball game.

Burkett finished 8-for-14 passing with the one touchdown. He threw for 97 yards and one pick.

Defensively LHU got a solid outings from Luke Ellison (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and Ryan Faddish (North Huntington, Pa./Serra Catholic).

Each recorded six tackles on the day.

Five of Ellison six tackles were solo stops. He also had two tackles for a loss and one sack. Faddish had two solo tackles.

Dean Tortorice (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional), Shawn Crebs (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Wes Plummer (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) all had five tackles.

Back in action:

The Bald Eagles head back out on the road to close out the 2009 campaign. Lock Haven is back in action next Saturday, November 7 at C.W. Post. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
