WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (18-4) used two second-half goals and shutout Monmouth (9-12) 2-0 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship match.
The title marks the Lady Eagles fourth consecutive crown and gives them a berth in Tuesday’s NCAA Division I play-in match.
With the win, LHU improves to 45-3 all-time in NEC action, as The Haven has gone a perfect 8-0 in four NEC tournaments.
After a scoreless opening half in the title match, sophomore Kristi Shepps (Willow Street, Pa./ Penn Manor) put LHU up 1-0 in the 51st minute.
Shepps knocked home a pass from Alanna Lewis (Trinidad and Tobago/Southeast Port-of-Spain), who was named NEC Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight season on the eve of the tournament.
With LHU still leading 1-0, senior Suzann Hobart (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) put the game away with just 2:15 left in regulation.
Hobart was free on a breakaway and buried the ball in the back of the cage to put the icing on the cake for the Lady Eagles.
LHU goalkeeper Erin Terreeson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) was tremendous again and made three saves on the way to the win.
Lock Haven dominated the match from the start and outshot Monmouth 13-6. LHU also held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
With the win LHU advances to its fourth straight NCAA play-in match.
Hobart was named the Tournament’s MVP, as the senior scored a goal in both NEC tournament games for LHU.
Along with Hobart, Shepps, Lewis and Amanda Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) made the All-Tournament team for leading LHU to the championship.
Lock Haven will travel to Patriot League champion American on Tuesday, November 10.
