CHEYNEY, Pa. - It was a battle between two winless squads but the Cheyney University Wolves (1-4) came out of the battle with its first win of the season as they defeated the Lock Haven University Bald Eagles 30-19.
Cheyney got on the board first as Quarterback Derrick Murray found Eric Frazier on the end of a nine yard strike to put the Wolves on the board. But Cheyney couldn’t capitalize on the extra point as kicker Andrew Effiong booted the ball wide left to make the score 6-0.
66 seconds later after forcing LHU into a three and out Cheyney found pay dirt again as Murray this time found Dominique Curry on a quick screen and Curry scampered 96 yards to make the score 13-0 following a Effiong PAT.
The ensuing Lock Haven drive was a thing of beauty as they started at midfield off a great return by Aaron Pryer (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic). LHU gave Cheyney a heavy dose of Freshman Running Back Ibrahim Smith (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) on the drive which was capped off by Fullback Gerald Thompson’s (Brentwood, Calf./College of San Mateo) two yard burst over the goal line to cut the lead to six at 13-7 following a Marc Domonkos (Windber, Pa./Bishop McCort) PAT. The drive took 11 plays and chewed up over five and a half minutes of clock.
Cheyney would receive the following kickoff and lose yardage on the return as they tried a reverse but the LHU cover team defended well. Following a three and out Cheyney chose to punt the ball away from their own 12. The ensuing snap went over the head of punter Billy Mitchell and out of the back of the end zone for a safety bringing the Bald Eagles within four as the score stood at 13-9.
Both teams would go back and forth for the rest of the first quarter but no scoring would occur as the score at the end of the first period was in favor of Cheyney 13-9.
But it wouldn’t last for long as on Cheyney’s first drive of the second quarter they would cover 47 yards on eight plays before settling for a 25 yard chip shot from Effiong to extend the Cheyney lead to 16-9.
LHU’s offense came back on to the field with a different field general as starter Tyler Golden (Tyrone, Pa./Tyrone) was pulled and fellow QB Josh Watters (Olyphant, Pa./Bishop O'Hara) took over the reigns. Even with a new Quarterback it was more of the same though as Smith continued to bull over the Wolves defense to the tune of 49 yards on a drive which resulted in a Jason Eby (Ulster, Pa./Athens) one yard QB sneak to break the plane and knot the score up at 16 a piece.
Both teams would then go back and forth until the Bald Eagles offense got the ball in Cheyney territory with 17 seconds to play in the first half. Following a 22 yard strike to Wide Receiver Chris Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) and a four yard pop by Smith LHU brought the field goal unit out to attempt to take the lead. As time expired on the first half Domonkos’ 38 yard boot went through the uprights and gave the Bald Eagles the lead as they headed to the locker room.
The third quarter saw no scoring from either team as the defenses adjusted at the half and shut each other down for a scoreless third.
The fourth quarter would start off in a big way for Cheyney as they would mount a 14 play 92 yard drive that chewed off the first 6:29 of the final frame. The drive was capped off by a six yard touchdown strike to Curry, who had a phenomenal afternoon for the Wolves. The score gave the lead back to Cheyney by a 23-19 margin. The two teams would trade the ball once a piece and LHU would get the ball back with an opportunity to regain the lead.
The drive started at the Cheyney 31 following a Sharif Proctor (Philadelphia/Glen Mills) interception return. The Haven moved the ball on the ground but the drive stalled out at the 16 as fourth down approached. Following a delay of game the LHU offense set up shop for a 4th and 11 attempt. Eby would roll out of the pocket on a option play and the pitch between him and Smith fell to the turf and Cheyney’s Joe Okafor picked up the fumble and returned it 75 yards to put the game out of reach.
LHU would have another opportunity but could put any more points on the scoreboard as they fell 30-19, despite 19 first downs and 160 yards on the ground.
Leading the LHU charge was Smith who ran for 114 yards on 23 carries. Smith’s 100 yard performance was the first in nearly three seasons for LHU.
Leading the way for Cheyney was Curry who caught for 190 yards on the day and Murray who threw for 267.
Lock Haven was penalized 17 times for 143 yards which was the difference maker in the game.
Leading the Bald Eagles defensively was Linebacker Shawn Crebs (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) who had six tackles on the afternoon.
The win snapped a 23 game losing streak for Cheyney.
The Bald Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, October 6 as they travel to Edinboro. The trip will wrap up a four game road trip for LHU as the opening kick is slated for 2:00 p.m.
