CLARION, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (6-7-1, 2-3-1 PSAC West) put fourth a tremendous effort tonight on the road and it paid off for the Lady Eagles as they shutout Clarion University (4-5-2, 2-3-1 PSAC West) 1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Action avenging an earlier season loss to CU in memorable fashion.
In the win senior goalkeeper Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) became the Lady Eagles all-time career saves leader.
Needing only two saves to tie the record, Wagner surpassed Jen Foster’s (1995-99) mark of 294 with her third save of the game in just the eighth minute of play tonight.
Wagner had eight total saves putting her all alone at the top with 300 and counting.
The Haven offense also came through for Wagner, who recorded her third shutout of the season, giving her 17 for her career which is third all-time on the Lady Eagles list.
Rookie Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) netted her fourth goal of the season in the 70th minute of play providing the only goal LHU would need to drop the host Golden Eagles.
Senior-captain Kyleigh Roth (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) played a ball into the box from the left side after streaking in toward CU’s goal after receiving a pass from teammate Katie Decker (White Hall, Md./Hereford), who had a tremendous game according to LHU head coach Heather Davis..
Roth crossed the ball into Gordon, who was making a slashing run toward goal where she was able to head it far post beating Clarion goalkeeper Jess Reed.
Davis was very pleased with the all-around effort from her team in tonight’s game.
Sarah Thomas (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Jenny Finocchiaro (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) both turned in solid performances while helping the Haven earn the important conference win.
“We are very pleased to get the win tonight,” Davis said. “It was a good result especially since Emily broke the record and got the shutout, the win was icing on the cake for us.”
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 when they travel to Shippensburg University.
