LHU Soccer - Men

Lock Haven Falls in Hard Fought Battle to Shippensburg, 4-2

Doug Moran had three shots on goal in today's 4-2 defeat at Shippensburg.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (8-4, 7-3 PSAC) fell on the road today to a hot Shippensburg University squad 4-2 on the campus of Shippensburg University.

Shippensburg, coming off two wins already this week, came out of the gates strong, having two solid goal scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

It wasn’t until the 15th minute that Shippensburg found the back of the net, as Geremy Graham made the score 1-0 early on in the game.

After the goal, Lock Haven began to regain momentum, with freshman Austin Callaro (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) hitting the crossbar on a shot from 20 yards out in the 17th minute.

Doug Moran (Butler, Pa./Butler) shortly followed Callaro’s chance with one of his own, having a solid scoring chance in the 24th minute that was turned away by Shippensburg goalkeeper Chris Popolizio.

Lock Haven didn’t capitalize on their opportunities until one minute was left in the half, as senior All-American candidate Ashley Rosindale (Bradford, England/Beckfoot School) slipped a shot past Popolizio for his 6th goal of the season, and reagined the momentum for the Bald Eagles heading into the half.

Lock Haven couldn’t carry the momentum into the second half however, as Austin Alfonsi scored the first goal of the second half in the 76th minute after his shot rebounded off LHU goalkeeper Chad Feerrar, and an alert Alfonsi recovered and put his shot past Feerrar, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Red Raiders.

Only a minute later, Shippensburg struck again, as Brad Anderson scored off an assist from Brad Jaindl on a defensive breakdown for the Haven, running the score to 3-1 with less than 15 minutes left in the contest. However, Lock Haven would not go down without a fight.

Freshman Martin Pletz (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) scored his 5th goal of the season with only three minutes left in the second half on an assist from LHU’s other All-American hopeful, junior Paul Huckett (Grimsby, England/Grimsby College), for his 8th assist of the year and 22nd point of the season. Pletz’s goal from Huckett made the score 3-2 with only minutes remaining.

Lock Haven pushed hard in the last two minutes, applying heavy pressure to Shippensburg’s back line, but the pressure backfired, as freshman Dave Rodstad slipped in behind the Lock Haven defense and scored the final goal of the game on Brad Jaindl’s second assist of the game, making the score 4-2 with less than a minute remaining.

Lock Haven falls to 7-3 in PSAC play, but still has a hold on 2nd place in the conference as California University, who the Bald Eagles will take on Wednesday at California, lost today 1-0 to East Stroudsburg.

The game versus California is slated for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
