Men’s Soccer Falls in Clash of PSAC Powers, 3-1

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.- The Lock Haven University men’s soccer squad, ranked fifth in the NSCAA Northeast regional ranknings, (7-3, 6-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) fell to the #12 team in the nation and the #2 Northeast region East Stroudsburg University Warriors (9-1, 7-1 PSAC) by the score of 3-1 at Eiler-Martin Stadium on the campus of East Stroudsburg University today, a day that was full of missed opportunities.

Things did not start off well for the Bald Eagles, as East Stroudsburg forward Jason Shegda scored the first goal of the contest only four minutes into the game on a defensive miscue, giving ESU the early 1-0 lead.

Only a few minutes later, sophomore Tommy Ehrlich (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) showed off his superior ball skills, blowing by a Warrior defender and getting taken down inside the penalty area, resulting in a penalty shot.

The penalty shot, taken by Paul Huckett (Grimsby, England/Grimsby College) was banged off the crossbar, and was one of the many missed opportunities on offense for The Haven.

Ehrlich continued to have falls caused against him, drawing two fouls within 13 minutes that resulted in scoring chances for coach Doug Moore’s squad.

The latter of the fouls resulted in a free kick opportunity for Ashley Rosindale (Bradford, England/Beckfoot School) that narrowly missed the back of the net, sailing high.

With the score still 1-0 with 33 minutes remaining, Phil Liversedge (Darlington, England/Texas A&M International) took down ESU forward Jason Shegda in the open field, resulting in a red card, and proved to be a game changing call.

Playing with 10 men and without Liversedge, Lock Haven simply could not keep up with East Stroudsburg’s speed, resulting in ESU putting in two more goals , with the second coming off the foot of Roshane Ellison.

Lock Haven did get on the board however, with freshman Martin Pletz (Pittsburgh/Carlynton) finding the junior Huckett with under 10 minutes left for Lock Haven’s only goal of the game, and making the score 3-1.

“I thought we completely dominated the game after the first goal at the beginning until half time,” said coach Doug Moore. “The sendoff definitely changed the entire face of the game. We just seemed to run out of players towards the end, but I was definitely proud of the fact that we dominated long periods of the game,” said Moore of his squads effort, who will now fall into second place in the PSAC.

The Bald Eagles will return to action a week from today, Saturday, Sept. 29 and will take on Kutztown University at 2 p.m.
