LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (8-10-1, 3-6-1 PSAC West) was edged 1-0 by No. 14 Slippery Rock University (15-3-1, 8-1-1 PSAC West) in the Lady Eagles season finale.
SRU, the nation’s 14th ranked team scored the game’s only goal in 36th minute play after a Rock forward knocked in a rebound.
LHU pressed hard late doing everything they could to create scoring chances, but nothing could find the back of the net for the Lady Eagles as they left it all on the field on what could be the last women’s soccer game ever played on historic McCollum Field.
The Haven nearly went up 1-0 with just over 17 minutes to play in the opening half as rookie Arielle Gordon (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) almost beat SRU goalie Lauren McManus from out in front of the goal, forcing McManus to make a stop.
With just 13 minutes to play in the match Gordon was at it again streaking toward goal after senior defender Lynnette Reitz (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) played the ball in for her to run onto.
Reitz stood above a free kick from about 30 yards out and played a floating ball toward goal to a streaking Gordon, who just couldn’t get a touch on it as it found the hands of Slippery Rock’s keeper.
Gordon finished the season with four goals and four assists, marking a strong rookie campaign from the Ephrata, Pa. native.
Defensively the Haven got strong efforts from a trio of seniors including Jamie Cranmer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), Jenny Finocchiaro (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) and Reitz.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Decker (White Hall, Md./Hereford) gave a strong effort in the midfield today for LHU as senior Sam Engard (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) also provided a spark to the Haven’s midfield play coming off the bench.
Senior goalkeeper Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) was in her usual spot between the pipes today as she played in every minute of every game this season for the Lady Eagles. She made four saves today stretching her single season mark to 123, which is second all-time for a single season mark.
She finishes her notable career with 331 saves marking the Lady Eagle career record.
“I was pleased with our effort, we played hard and gave it everything we had today,” LHU head coach Heather Davis said. “They should be proud of their effort in the last women’s soccer game played on McCollum.”
The Lady Eagles finished the season with an 8-10-1 overall and a 3-6-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West record. Senior Colleen Kafka (Candor, N.Y./Candor) led the team in goals and points with nine and 18, respectively.
